Title: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: secretoracle on July 15, 2009, 10:05:23 AM With warmer weather some of the upper classmen have left the cafeteria for outside. Dave, Greg, and Rob on the other hand have kept to the Usual Suspects table. Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: cassbackward on July 15, 2009, 10:12:17 AM With warmer weather some of the upper classmen have left the cafeteria for outside. Dave, Greg, and Rob on the other hand have kept to the Usual Suspects table. Sylvia sits next to Rob, chatting idly about the MacGyver marathon they've been chewing through on DVD. "But see, you can't have just one brand of duct tape. They all have different properties. Like, super-tack duct tape? Not so good when you're rigging a trigger-operated trap." As she speaks, she nudges a pencil out from under the lunch table with her shoe, into traffic, and two guys from the basketball team veer off their courses from fifteen feet away to fetch it. They bonk heads bending over. Sylvia winces. "Ooh, sorry." Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: Kat on July 15, 2009, 10:15:10 AM Sammy's longing gaze out the window at the inviting spring weather is interrupted by the end of class bell. She sighs heavily and reluctantly trudges off in the direction of the cafeteria. When she gets there, she plonks her belongings down on the chair next to the one Sylvia is almost definitely saving for Donnie. "Hey," she says. "How's it going?" Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: cassbackward on July 15, 2009, 10:20:22 AM When she gets there, she plonks her belongings down on the chair next to the one Sylvia is almost definitely saving for Donnie. "Hey," she says. "How's it going?" "A-okay," Sylvia says, but there's a little bit of regret, and boredom, in her tone. "Code green. Nothing to see here. Move along, citizen." She brightens. "Got plans for the week? Now that the concert's over, you don't have rehearsals, right? Going out? Seeing the boys?" Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: secretoracle on July 15, 2009, 10:22:51 AM Murmurs of "Good." come from the guys. After the pencil is returned to Sylvia and the boys head off rob leans into her shoulder and smiles. "Little things." he says, then straightens up, "Yeah, but you have to assume that Duck brand is generic enough to serve like ninety percent of your needs though." Elrod and Nick make a pass by the table. Elrod kisses her neck, "I need to finish this college entrance essay thing. Dinner Friday night, maybe some live music and dancing?" Nick kisses her cheek. "Have to cancel Saturday. It's a thing." he waves dismissively, "Can we do Sunday instead or is it too far to fly and get back if you have to go to school the next day?" Sammy murmurs her assent to both sets of plans, reassuring Nick that flying there and back again won't be too difficult. When they have each stopped and gone, she shrugs her shoulders at Sylvia. "Now you're as up to date on my plans as I am." "Sure. Local golf, or would you like to go somewhere?" "That depends," Sylvia says. "How are things with you and Alicia these days?" Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: Kat on July 15, 2009, 11:21:30 AM Sammy nods and smiles affably. "Sure. Local golf, or would you like to go somewhere?" "That depends," Sylvia says. "How are things with you and Alicia these days?" Sammy stops unwrapping her sandwich. "I dunno. Ask her. But your answer leads me to believe you would rather do it closer to home? You didn't jump up and squeal "Ooh, San Francisco" when you were offered a free ticket to anywhere." Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: AlleyCat on July 15, 2009, 11:30:34 AM Alicia stalks into the cafeteria, defining the meaning of the term. On the way, she stops at a table where a few of the remaining upperclassmen who haven't left for brighter ground are sitting, and converses shortly with one of the boys, to his obvious discomfort. Her business done, she glides the rest of the way to the US table and nods to the group as she takes a seat. "Hey." Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: cassbackward on July 15, 2009, 11:32:54 AM Sammy stops unwrapping her sandwich. "I dunno. Ask her. But your answer leads me to believe you would rather do it closer to home? You didn't jump up and squeal "Ooh, San Francisco" when you were offered a free ticket to anywhere." "If it's just us, why stop at San Francisco? They have mini golf in Paris, right? But if it's a small crowd, transportation will be more of an issue." That's the pragmatic answer Sylvia gives Sammy, but really she was just sussing out the situation at the lunch table. Things have been different since she got back from Arizona with Colin and whoever else went. She's been nicer to Alicia, for instance--ridiculously patient, even--and training harder, even though things have been quiet. "Do you just sort of head out at random?" she asks. "No travel plans? Like, is there something you want to see that you've never seen?" Her business done, she glides the rest of the way to the US table and nods to the group as she takes a seat. "Hey." "Hey," Sylvia says, giving Alicia a casual glance that's really a status check. Blood? Bruises? Mood? Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: AlleyCat on July 15, 2009, 11:50:48 AM Alicia looks... sharper. She's not aloof, but a bit distracted, her mind churning through planned scenarios involving someone deserving getting hurt. The dark river that is her mind is running smoothly, but no less dark and rapid. "Planning a trip there, Sam?" she says casually, extracting her lunch from her bag. Paris is not, and its on the other side of an ocean which I may or may not be able to cross on my own. But yeah, I'd like to see Paris. And Rome. And London. And Sydney, and Mount Kilimanjaro... Someday, I will. For now, the magic game spinner points my way, and I stop if I hit ocean or international borders. Or if something below catches my interest enough to make me want to check it out." She resumes unwrapping her food. Alicia looks... sharper. She's not aloof, but a bit distracted, her mind churning through planned scenarios involving someone deserving getting hurt. "That's up to Sylvia," Sammy responds. Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: cassbackward on July 15, 2009, 12:16:48 PM "That's up to Sylvia," Sammy responds. Sylvia has the feeling that, if she lets this continue, she's going to be the Berlin wall--hated on both sides and covered in graffiti and bullet holes. "It might be too rainy this weekend for golf here in Chicago, but I'm game for anything. I just want to get out and have some fun." There. Buck passed. Sylvia rolls her pencil out into the aisle again, and a couple of soccer players provide the girls with a display of etched hamstrings and curvaceous gastrocnemii. Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: Doc on July 15, 2009, 12:27:11 PM Colin arrives, noticing the pencil scene, and gives Sylvia a look. He looks thoughtful. He's been for quite a while. "Hey." he says with a wave as he sits down. It's spring like, so he's stopped wearing the jacket that he wears when it's cold and is just in his traditional blue t-shirt and jeans look. He digs his lunch out of it's bag, along with a few power bars, and begins to eat. Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: Kat on July 15, 2009, 12:31:57 PM There. Buck passed. Sammy smiles and her eyes are suddenly cloaked by half lowered lashes. "Pssst," she whispers to the closer one. "You have lint or something on the back of your shorts. Right there. Want me to wipe it off?" She reaches out and pats very gently at the non-existant lint. "There. You're good." She wiggles her fingers bye-bye at the nice, sturdy, healthy athlete. Colin arrives, noticing the pencil scene, and gives Sylvia a look. He looks thoughtful. He's been for quite a while. "San Francisco is doable in a day. She has to get out of here before the A-is-for-angst-bomb goes off. "Pardon me, guys. I have to talk to Cleo." Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: opensesame on July 15, 2009, 12:50:02 PM Sarah strolls into lunch with a smile. She waves at Sylvia as she gets up to head off somewhere. "Hey all." She picks up her pace to join the freshman cheerleaders (trapped inside), makes a show of asking them where Cleo is, and then waltzes out into the yard, fearless of the administration's impotent requests. Donnie is kind of stunned by Sammy straddling him and for a moment, his hands hesitated around her, as if he were thinking of grabbing her behind. He embraces her, if a bit hesitantly. "Not that I want to break up the lovely scene," Alicia says in a conversational voice, "But you are way beyond the PDA threshold. Trust me, I know. Typical of Donnie, he's blushing like mad and mumbles his thanks. His heartbeat is raised, and as he grabs his can of coke, his hand shakes a little from the sudden surge of endorphins and adrenaline. He reaches for a cookie, and his hand brushes Sarah's. He quirks his head and looks at her strangely. "Sarah, why do you feel all magicky?" Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: Kat on July 15, 2009, 11:21:18 PM She hasn't left yet. "I can't stop you," Sammy says. She looks apologetically at the other girl. "I'm not mad at you. I like you. I don't like feeling sad or angry or stupid all the time, and lately, that's all I feel when I'm here. The simplest thing to do is walk away before I do something even stupider, or feel more angry or much sadder, because as hard as I try to let the bad feelings go, that frown ain't turning itself upside down." Dammit. He waves at the rest of the US and gathers his stuff to trot after Sammy and Sarah. She's sporting a long-sleeved hoodie over her regular T-shirt. At least her shades hide her still blood-shot eyes. She makes her way to the US table, ignoring the reactions around her. A trio of boys whisper among themselves, stealing looks at her as one of them sniggers. Alica tilts her head slightly and a dangerous smile graces her mouth. Without slowing, Alicia detours to where the three are standing. When they see her approach, the boys scatter like a flock of birds. Her smile widening with satisfaction, Alicia returns back to her original course and arrives at the table without further incident. Dropping her bag, she greets the assembled with her usual "Hey." She looks puzzled at the variety of scents she detects: vinegar, sage, mint, horseradish (!), and that's just the stuff she can pick out. She gives Colin a speculative look. "You just put this s**t together to see if I'd actually drink it," she says jokingly. "Besides, how did you know...? Oh, never mind," she adds in mock-exasperation. She glances at Sylvia. "You're my witness in case he poisons me," she warns her. With theatrical reluctance, she takes a sip. Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: Doc on July 27, 2009, 12:46:00 PM It's sweet, very sweet at first, and it seems to soothingly warm up her throat, making the air she breathes fresher in comparison, and that's relieving too. Once it's down, though, it leaves a somewhat salty aftertaste. It almost makes her want to cluck her tongue. And though it's good, she doesn't want to take another sip right away. Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: motley on July 27, 2009, 12:49:13 PM "Licorice root and honey..." Laney mumbles with a half smile as she settles into a seat and begins unpacking her lunch. The unexpected presence of a red mechanical pencil at the bottom of the wrinkled brown sack has her utterly confused for several minutes. Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: AlleyCat on July 27, 2009, 01:40:14 PM It's sweet, very sweet at first, and it seems to soothingly warm up her throat, making the air she breathes fresher in comparison, and that's relieving too. Once it's down, though, it leaves a somewhat salty aftertaste. It almost makes her want to cluck her tongue. And though it's good, she doesn't want to take another sip right away. Alicia's eyebrow raises as she smacks her lips. She takes a couple of test breaths and seems satisfied with the results. She nods to Colin in gratitude, re-stoppers the bottle and slips it into her bag. Suddenly her face registers alarm and her hands fly to her throat as she starts belting out, in a throaty voice with definitely less rasp: "Who can take a sunrise, Sprinkle it with dew. Cover it with choc'late and a miracle or two? The Candy Man, Oh, the Candy Man can. The Candy Man can 'cause he mixes it with love And makes the world taste good." After her little exhibition, she smirks at Colin and goes back to her lunch. He says it with a smile. Sylvia can't let that rest. Donnie's a magician, after all. "Is that true? Really? Has anyone tried that?" Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: BaboonBill on July 27, 2009, 02:33:19 PM Donnie's grin broadens. "Hell, I don't know. I like my intestines exactly where they are now. "We should do that some night, see if we can call up the Candyman or Bloody Mary, see what answers if we use a Ouija board. You and Colin. We should have done that last Halloween," she says regretfully. He says it with a smile. "Naw," Alicia denies with a wave of her hand. "I couldn't let you be the only one to introduce radical hairstyles to the group." Alicia's grin is cheerful. Her voice shows signs of definite improvement; now it sounds throaty instead of raspy. "Besides," she looks around demonstratively. "No mirrors around, see? Now if I called out Beetlejuice three times, then we could have some serious fun!" Donnie's grin broadens. "Hell, I don't know. I like my intestines exactly where they are now. After all..." Taking advantage of her roughened voice, she quotes directly from the movie. "I attended Juilliard. I'm a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I've seen the EXORCIST ABOUT A HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT. NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO A DEAD GUY. NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK? You think I'm qualified?" She breaks up in giggles after that. Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: opensesame on July 27, 2009, 06:38:25 PM Donnie laughs. "That was totally Michale Keaton's best role." Sarah offers to Donnie, "He made a really good Dogberry and I liked his voice for Batman, the rest of him not so much." She smiles over at Alicia, "I like your hair. It's so short and fuzzy looking. Can I touch it? Way better than Brit's. More like Sinéad O'Connor. Which also gives you the advantage of not comparing yourself to an absolute redneck." Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: AlleyCat on July 27, 2009, 07:14:53 PM Alicia gives Sarah an amused look, "Yeah, sure, just be careful with this spot over here," she indicates an area on the left side near the back. "Still kinda tender there." The skin underneath the hair does look a bit reddish, and what little hair is there feels brittle. "Sinead O'Connor? Was she, like, some singer or something?" Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: opensesame on July 27, 2009, 08:01:04 PM Sarah nods, "Yeah, my mom and dad have all this music from the eighties and nineties. Some of it's pretty good. Some of it... not so much. I had no idea that Rick Rolling was sooo old though! The song was like twenty years old! Oh and they have VHS tapes of MTV back when they played videos all day. Sounds like a good idea to me unless they played just the top ten over and over or something. That would get boring quick. I should convert all those tapes into MP4's or something and put them on their computer for their anniversary!" Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: motley on July 27, 2009, 08:04:01 PM Laney raises her head and interjects, "MTV wasn't around in sixty-seven." Tupac and Wu-Tang clan, that sort of s**t." She grins. "Although I do remember catching sight of some Julio Iglesias in her collection when she thought I wasn't looking." Title: Re: Chapter 60-1 Lunch Post by: cassbackward on July 27, 2009, 10:35:18 PM "Indigo Girls," Sylvia chimes in. "Roy Orbison. Sting and David Bowie. Concrete Blonde." Mostly of the nice and curious kind not the angry and murderous, though. If you ever want me to introduce them, you only have to ask." What's nice is that he says that as if he was talking about the weather. Laney raises her head and interjects, "MTV wasn't around in sixty-seven. "Why sixty-seven? 'Never gonna give you up' was eighty-seven. 'Nothing compares to you', if memory serves, was ninety. MTV started much earlier, in eighty-one." Sarah nods, "Yeah, my mom and dad have all this music from the eighties and nineties. Some of it's pretty good. Some of it... not so much. I had no idea that Rick Rolling was sooo old though! I wouldn't mind having a look at that. The eighties are always a good mine of amazing imagery for any visual artist." "My mom has always been more about classical and jazz. Chet Baker is her favorite, I think. I'm not sure about dad, but I remember him in an old Ramones t-shirt. But Chris..." he shakes his head grinning "I found two tapes in his car. The Blues Brothers soundtrack and... Caravan of Love by the Housemartins. Ever heard it?" Elrod's not in a class, or is he cutting? He's in a class at lunchtime, then he's not in a class... which is it? This is another one of those weird anomalies that is driving her crazy. If I recall correctly he didn't have a class during this lunch period until after the mid-term break. It's probably an art or music credit he's blowing off from time to time.
