After practice Lisa comes over to Megan.  "Do you know the Freshman quarterback, Stewart I think his name is, and more importantly, are you dating him?"

Megan was feeling somewhat tired after practice, but very good, she was starting to get the hang of the squad’s dance routines and the cheers were pretty easy to get down as well.  She looked at Lisa a moment, slightly caught off by the questions as she replies, “I kinda know who he is, from Texas I think.  But I have hardly had a chance to say hello to him just yet, so no, I am not dating him.”

Lisa straddels the bench Megan is sitting on, "I was just thinking, it's a natural combination.  I'd ask him out myself, but he's a Freshman and I'm a Senior, it just wouldn't be fair to him.  Buuuut, you two will be here the next four years, and my dad says he's gonna be  a star.  Just say'in."

Megan almost laughed, but knew enough not to do that in front of Lisa.  Here she was barely a week into high school and one of her new “friends” was starting some pressure about who would be a good fit to be her boyfriend.  But if Lisa’s dad was right, and given his interest in the football team he might well have an ability to spot talent, dating the new quarterback as his position in the school increased would be a huge boost to her own status. 

“Yeah, that does make sense.”  She replies with a slight smile.  “I will have to try to talk to him sometime this week before the game Friday then.”

"Well."  Lisa says, a sly smile cutting across her face, "I know everyone on the team, I could find out who he hangs out with and maybe arrange for you to 'run' into him."  She emphasizes 'run' by making the quote marks with her fingers.

Megan returns the smile as she replies, “that sounds like a good way to set things up.”  As she listened, she realized she was going to need to start learning as much as she could about lots of people in this large school, or at least the important ones, that was the only way to really get to a position of importance as Lisa had obviously figured out.

"I'll start asking around.  In the meantime, we better get over to Tasty Dog before all the seats are gone."
