Title: Character Generation Chatter
Post by: secretoracle on August 21, 2006, 10:21:16 AM
Any questions or comments or suggestions about characters can go here.  I know most of you will build you own characters, but there will still be a good bit of chatter as we get the kinks worked out.

Title: Friend with a car
Post by: secretoracle on August 21, 2006, 10:00:42 PM
I think at least one of you should have a friend with a car.  I'd hate for the "team" not to be able to go into the city late at night to "do something" because no one has access to a car.  You're all Freshmen, so no driver's license's yet.

I thought some possibilities would be Sarah, she has several friends (from her brief bio) and I can see one or two of them being older and maybe a Junior with a license and a car.  This is one of those things where I thought of her since her friends are more likely to be accepting of the others, an elitist's friends may not like the ide of giving rides to dorks and so forth.

Anyone else with a suggestion, even if it's yourself.  This isn't am exclusive thing, I'm thinking of it for regards to "Adventures".  I'm fine if everyone knows someone with a car, but the idea of a single NPC that can sort of become "Hero Support" by driving the group places appeals to me.

Panel van, old VW bus, something like that.  total beater, but big enough to haul a good number of PCs (that is sooo trnasparent a plot device Darren)

Feats: Combat Feats -: () Fortune Feats 1: (Ultimate Skill (Perform)) General Feats 4: (Ambidexterity, Direction Sense, Equipment, Trance) Skill Feats 2: (Emotive Performance, Lightning Calculator)

Powers:

Base Attack And Defense: - Base Attack Bonus and - Base Defense Bonus

Combat:
Attack - (List Individual Attack Bonus’s here) Defense -- (-- Flat-footed, --etc.) Init --

Saves: Toughness -(-1) Fortitude -(-1) Reflex -(+1) Will -(-1)

Drawbacks: Headaches (Common, Moderate); Migraines (Uncommon, Major)

Abilities 12 + Skills 7 (28 Ranks) + Feats 7 + Powers -- + Combat - + Saves 0 – Drawbacks 6 = 20pp’s

Emotive Performance (Skill, Ranked)

Emotive Performance is Emotion Control (See page 84) linked to a performance skill. Only usable when the Performance check achieves Great or better. Each Rank in this Feat is one Rank in Emotion Control. The GM controls the effects on the listener, while the Performer determines the specific emotion being conveyed (generally through the tone and theme of the piece) The effects are lasting according to the Time & Values Chart.

Emotion Control
Flaw(Sense Dependent)
Flaw(Limited- Only when succeeding on a DC 20 Performance Check, and while performing)
Extra(Affects all who experience the performance first hand)

[Total Cost 1/rank]

Headaches: While with headache, character is Shaken, and also suffers a further –2 penalty to Dexterity

Migraines: While with migraine, character is Shaken, Nauseated, suffers a –2 penalty to Dexterity and may experience other affects including but not limited to, hallucinations, the Helpless condition, the Panicked Condition, or Unconsciousness at the GM’s discretion.

Notes:
Here's a rough sketch of Seth. Without the powers for right now. He comes in a little above 15 pts, but his drawbacks are heafty at worst. I may end up regretting them. After getting a tentative approval of this. I'll concentrate on the Bio, then the powers.

Perform really doesn't work the way i want it to. Bard anyone? So using the powers as feats option, i sketched a little something up. Interested in your thoughts & comments. It's sense dependent, & requires a good performance. Area didn't really simulate what i was looking for in terms of scope. Its supposed to be a broadcast thing. I think a +1 extra on something like this with the sense dependet flaw captures the feel of what listening to a good concert entails without breaking the rules at all. Plus it allows it to come quite nicely in a 1pp/rank (ideal for a feat). The idea is that he plays emotive performances...if he plays a love song...people swoon. Not for long. He's still learning. In fact at rank 1 only the first few seconds after a performance. But with time, training and whatnot...his concerts can be very persuasive emotional experiences. Just like some of the better concerts i have seen. For example. A movie like Love Actually, might have an emotive performance rank of 7. the 5 hours after watching such a movie are frought with the emotional of love. or despair. I think the uncontrolled flaw is assumed on something like this. It's really up the gm how the emotions translate to an audience.

With the rare exception of the teenage love song wrote just for that special someone. That creates love in the recipient(listenrer) for the sender(song-writer/player)

That's cool with me.  Though Dave might just have an initial problem with the uppercrust members of the team at first.  He'll just order them into the back and tell them not to touch his stuff.  (which is likely everywhere).
But how many of us are there?  And does anyone have a means of travel of their own?

Oh and where should we post our character stats info?  Here or somewhere seperate?

I need some help isolating Lightning Calculator.  Is it two ranks of Quickness applied to mental tasks only?

I'm plugging these into a spreadsheet and need to know so I can put it in in a way the sheet will understand.

You included powers in this version.  Does she actually have powers at this point, do you want her to?

It takes up 9 points, which is the lion share of the points you have to build with before throwing the other 45 on.  If you want to go that route I'm ok with it, but those 9 points might be better spent on skills or something and then let the powers come from the main 45.

It's 3 ranks of Quickness applied only to doing mental tasks...Seth can do mental calculations 10x faster than average person.

Ah!  wasn't sure about that one myself.  I would like her powers to develop over time and to start showing up. - ala Smallville.

I made a base PL 1 character to start.  Didn't know quite what to spend points on at such a low power setting.

I can spend the 45 points building powers and what not and possibly work out with you (GM) when each of those powers shows up.

I had worked up character builds for PL 1, 2 & 3 adding 15 points each time, modifying powers, skills and abilities a little be along the way.

---------------------------

I think I might stick with my build but we can just white out the powers until such time as they show up.  I don't think I would suffer all that much.    Does that sound okay?

---------------------------

Also - actually considering remodeling character a bit.  As Gaea is making a full on TK I might shift more heavily into Mental - swapping out TK for Telepathy.  But then I have no offense.  Uh... I'm gonna sit and think for a bit.

Mental Blast? Mental Trip? Pain?

Instead of a forcefield...some sort of phatasmaed Invisibility?

I know mentalists. I would love to help you in that requard. Of stick with the teke...and then maybe your mental powers are stronger. Perhaps your TK has a very limited range?

If there are two power sets i know backwards and forwards...it's Mentalist, and Telekinestisist. I would be happy to help you, sense it's me who put you in the pickle.

Help is always welcome.

It's funny, I like mental powers but I don't really like messing with people's heads.  :)

So... I went with Mental Transform 1 point - only changing memories.  The concept of rewriting a person is just too scarey.

Mental Blast or Trip might be good.  Maybe AP one off the other.
---------------------------

What powers are being brought to the group?  I don't even know who is in the group right now?

Oh mighty and all knowing secretoracle could we have a list of characters & suggested powers?  If anyone wants to keep their powers hidden that's cool.  Just leave them blank.  Like Gaea mentioned it's not always fun to be treading on each others toes.

Ahh, fans.

*****
This list and the comments made are the sole impression of the GM and in no way represent what the players actually tried to convey, so they'll have to fix any errors.

Jongluer as Kelly Stiley, a rebel who will become a victim of things he doesn't understand.

opensesame as Sarah Rollins, an oddball with a host of friends who wants to unlock the powers of her mind.

sacremas as Mattew Mannox, the kid everyone picks on who is about to find out that there are two sides to every story.  SHAZAM!

hero4hire as Ahiga Tuchawena, a Native American kid with a temper and the conviction to use it.  Can tap into the spirit world for strength and skill

Doc as Colin Crow, a Native American kid with insight into the world.  Precog, Postcog, a line into the mystical.

Mortarion as Calvin Stewart, football star with great potential.  A brick basically.

thevshi as Megan Howell, cheerleader and one of the most popular girls in school.  She's a speedster.

Gaea as Seth Mondsee, Child prodigy and headache sufferer who is finding powers from within his mind.

Uri as Timmy Jacobs, a science kid with a bright future.

rudeboyscott as Bruce Beck, a young man who's going insane.  Maybe.

cassbackward as Sylvia Avery-Vaughn, a new kid trying to find a place.  sometimes her mind can run away with her, and other people if she's not careful.  Emotion Control and mental illusions.

*****
Now, there is a theme of sorts.  A number of you have mental based powers.  I'm not a big fan of the idea that there must be a fighter, rouge, cleric, etc. to make a game good or make one work.  As for overlap, we can work out who does what and I think everyone should be able to do the stuff they wanted to without too much toe stepping.

Secretoracle has mine pretty much dead on.  My character is going to have the abilities of a super-soldier and maybe odder things as well, we shall find out since I did put a very small amount of points into the unknown.

Secretoracle, yeah, that is a pretty good description of Megan, though as a Freshman, it might be to early to say she is one of the more popular girls in school.  The Freshman class, yeah, school, not just yet :)

Will try to get her stats and more detailed bio information up soon.

Megan Howell
PL 1 (15 pts)

Str 8 (-1) Dex 14 (+2) Con 10 (-) Int 14 (+2) Wis 10 (-) Cha 14 (+2)

Skills: Acrobatics 2 (+4), Perform: Dance 2 (+4), Kn: Civics 2 (+4), Kn: Pop Culture 2 (+4)

Feats: Attractive, Dodge Focus, Benefit: Wealth

Combat: BAB 0, BDB 0, Defense 11 (flat 10)

Saves: Toughness 0, Fortitude 0, Reflex +2, Will 0

Stats: 10 + Skills: 2 + Feats 3 = 15

Bio:
Birthday: 7/20
Age: 14
Height: 5’ 4”
Weight: 105 lbs
Hair: Blond
Eyes: Blue

Megan is the youngest daughter of Donald and Erin Howell.  Her father was a partner in the Chicago law firm of Baker & McKenzie, the headquarters of the larges law firm in the United States and one of largest law firms in the world.  As a result he was not a major presence in either Megan’s life or that of her siblings.  Her family has always lived in one of the wealthiest areas of Oak Park, and she has long known many of the children of the richest families in the town.

Two years ago, her father decided to make a move into politics, leaving Baker & McKenzie and running for Mayor of Oak Park.  He easily won and has since been working to start building connections to try to move into some larger political office, possible even one of the state’s US Senate seats.

Megan is somewhat spoiled, never having much worries about getting what she wanted.  She has been training as a cheerleader, and was easily able to get herself onto the high school squad even before the tryouts official took place in the middle of the summer.  She is looking forward to high school, feeling she can easily move to her typical place at the top of the social ladder as she has in her other schools.  But now she is starting to face more pressures from her father and mother, who expect her to make her way into a good college.

Her older sister, Denise, just left for Yale, an accomplishment Megan isn’t sure she can duplicate.  Her older brother, Donald Jr., is a Junior at the high school and swimming star who is looking to get into Stanford or Dartmouth.

This makes me wonder, from a storyteller's perspective:  if Seth plays a song and catches Sylvia in it, does she turn into an emotional amplifier?

Timmy ‘TJ’ Jacobs
PL 1 (15 pts)

Str 7 (-2) Dex 13 (+1) Con 8 (-1) Int 16 (+3) Wis 10 (-) Cha 10 (-)

Skills: Computers 2 (+5), Craft (Mechanical) 4 (+7), Craft (Electronics) 2 (+5), Knowledge (Life sciences) 2 (+5), Knowledge (Physical Sciences) 4 (+7), Knowledge (Popular Culture) 2 (+5), Knowledge (Technology) 2 (+5), Medicine 1 (+1), Notice 3 (+3), Search 2 (+5), Sleight of Hand 2 (+4), Stealth 2 (+4)

Combat: Attack, Defence, Initiative +1

Saves: Toughness +1 (-1 flat-footed) , Fortitude -1, Reflex +1, Will 0

Stats:4 + Skills:7 + Feats:4  = 15

TJ is a small, thin, hyper 14 year old teenager, who was born on 2nd of February. He is full of energy and has an annoying voice, which isn’t high pitched but just grate on people‘s nerves. His height is just about 5’ 1. While he is physically weak he is also nimble, smart and observant. Sadly he often doesn’t know when to shut up and often gets bullied for wasting people’s time, although he is a fairly nice guy who acts friendly to everyone even those who bully him. He enjoys the computer and has an interest in sci-fi books and science, his favourite films are Serenity and the original Star Wars, he also enjoys comedies such as South Park, Monty Python and the Simpsons. He wants to be good at chemical science and believes that he is extremely skilled at it, like his father, but his true skills flourish when dealing mechanical and electronically science.

Harold, TJ’s father, creates new chemical substances in attempts to revolutionize the market, and these are serious well-planned attempts. Debra, his mother, works to create new ways to identify and heal diseases. He has no brothers or sisters. He knows that his father has a lab in his study and that only his parents have keys to it. He is an atheist believing that science disproves God.

Here's Timmeh! His stats our nothing special, apart from intelligence, but he makes up for it with a wide range of skills.

I am making my char, and I have a couple questions:

1) Can we assume we have what would be normal gear for a teenager, or if we want to have a cellphone, a pda (in my case mostly a camera and a bike) we have to take equipment?

2) Which skill would you use for biking and cross-biking? Drive? Acrobatics?

Assume you have all the stuff you'd need for your character to be the character you want to play, barring things like an invisible jet, secret underwater submarine base, etc.  If I see something I need to red flag I'll let you know.

2) Which skill would you use for biking and cross-biking? Drive? Acrobatics?

I think I read in an article somewhere that it was balance in standard D20, so assume that to ride a bike normally requires nothing, but to do stunts default to Acrobatics.  Cross-country would be a hybrid so a few points in Acrobatics should be more then adequate, unless he's a clutz at it.

Bruce Beck has grown up in Oak Park all his life.  Bruce and his twin sister Brandi are the spoiled only children of Greg Beck, professor of Anthropology at Loyola University and Dr. Amanda Beck, Assistant Director of Clinical Research at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital.  Affluent and successful, Greg and Amanda expected no less from Bruce and Brandi.  Their expectations were being met until this past summer.

Bruce and Brandi were straight A, honor roll students in grammar school, and Brandi is still excited about starting high school.  However, Bruce has exhibited some odd behavior lately.  Now, Bruce rarely leaves his room except to go skateboarding.  He has cut off contact with many of his friends and his parents don't know who he hangs with any more.  He has also begun to mock Brandi's "go-getter" attitude.

The truth is Bruce has been hearing voices.  Male, female, young, old, some in languages he can't quite understand.  It started the day after his fourteeenth birthday and in the past month or so has frightened him far beyond what his cool demeanor will ever show.  He spends much of his spare time locked in his room, looking up possible causes on the internet, and nothing he's found so far is very encouraging.  Bruce started hanging out with several "bad" kids behind his parents backs and in the past month has had his first cigarette and first drink in an effort to self-medicate.  He now cares more about the hottest bands and coolest clothes than schoolwork, family or anything else.

Bruce's parents are alarmed by the sudden changes, but are hesitant to step in at this point, assuming it's a phase.  While they would like to help Bruce "find his own way," they are concerned both for Bruce and Brandi, should there be no consequences to his behavior.

Sarah Rollins is the illegitimate love child of Henry Rollins.  Sadly that is a lie and Sarah has two very average, very low key suburban parents.  Her dad works for an insurance company doing… something.  He’s tried to explain but it never makes any sense to Sarah and it involves math.  Sarah’s mom is a teacher these days, not here in Oak Park, out in Elmhurst.  She teaches a bunch of la-de-da kids all about economics and they stare at her baffled and make comments like: Why don’t all those homeless people just get jobs?  Her mom used to have another job in Chicago years ago but something happened that she doesn’t want to talk about.  She just says that she wanted to change careers when Sarah came along to be with her daughter.  They used to live in Chicago but they couldn’t afford it with her mom’s new jobs salary.

Sarah is a dreamer.  She spends days staring up at the clouds or into puddles, crystals, mirrors, her navel… basically a space-case at times.  She’s always felt there had to be something more coming.  Something better or different needed to happen in her life.  Sarah spends a lot of time with her friends playing foolish games of fantasy which, much to her regret, involve a small amount of math but usually very easy math so the games are forgiven.  She reads a lot of books on the research of psychic powers.  She always has some article or another on the subject in her notebooks or rolled up in her back pocket.

Recently a blast from the past has arrived.  An old friend from grade school has become a Huskie.  Megan Howell.  Megan and Sarah used to play together all the time but by fifth grade they started going their separate ways.  Sarah was already into mental powers and superpowers in general.  Megan started becoming more interested in her dancing and trips to the mall and girly things like fashion and makeup.  They still took gymnastics together but there were twenty other girls there and not much time to chat or stay in touch.  Their friendship became mostly a smile and a wave hello and goodbye.  Then Sarah’s parents moved out to the burbs and that was the end of it.

She has good parents, and a little brother she actually gets along with most of the time.  They’ve made a pact to be rude to each other in public because it is viewed as more than strange to be nice to a sibling.  Martin “Mart” is a good kid.  He’s two years younger than Sarah and hell on two wheels whenever he’s not grounded.  Mart is a daredevil and a stunt junkie.  He jumps cars with his bicycle, climbs buildings bare-handed, skateboards, rollerblades, and would no doubt hang-glide, base jump and cliff-dive if given half the chance.

Sarah is fairly happy in an indifferent kind of way.  Nothing is wrong such as it is but nothing seems entirely right.  Is it teenage idleness that has her feeling empty and unfinished or something stranger?  With any luck it’s something totally weird and fantastic.

Colin Crow

Date of birth:   February 12, 1993
Place of birth: Norfolk, VA
Race: Half white / half native american
Height: 5' 3"
Weight: 110 lb.
Hair: Black
Eyes: Black

Colin is a strange kid, but in a good way. Though he's in no way one of the cool guys, he can fit with almost everyone, 'cause around him everybody seems to feel at ease. He's among the best three students in each of his courses, and he could excel if he only wanted but... he's not sure, he probably lacks the drive, the ambition to be the best. He studies because he likes to learn, not get a good grade, and it takes him little time, since he's got an excellent memory. He's almost pathologically naive, but in a cute, "forrest gumpy" kind of way. He always seems to see the best in each person, the potential friend yet to meet. This fact, and his willingness, even eagerness to help anybody who asks with his homework, has kept him from being harassed by all except the worst bullies, and even in those cases someone felt compelled to defend him. He wears big, almost huge glasses that seems to cover half his face, and without them he's nearly blind. They're so big because they are mounted on the frame of his father's old sunshades. Colin fancies that this way his dad, wherever he is, can see through them, and he can see through his father's eyes.
He knows a lot of things about the most disparate matters, so he can be quite interesting at times, and he never goes on and on about something like a true geek would. In fact, he usually prefers to listen, and he's quite good at it. Also, he never spills any secret, so people know they can trust him. It's like he could be any group's mascotte, and this way he's always tolerated. He's not very good at sports, but he likes biking, both on road and cross-country, hiking, and sleeping outside. He never goes anywhere without his digital camera, his true passion, and he often carries around a photo album to show his friends his latest works.

Colin's family

Jonathan Crow
(http://nathaniel-arcand.iwarp.com/html/images/bw-publicity2_jpg.jpg)
Jonathan Crow was born in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, SD, on February 13, 1967. His life there wasn't easy. His father and older brothers had alcohol-related problems and were often unemployed, so only with great efforts he managed to finish highschool. As soon as he reached legal age and had his diploma he decided that there was no future for him in the reservation and left, never turning back. He went to Rapid City, where a navy recruiter drew his attention. Jonathan enlisted into the Navy and was sent at the recruit training center at the Naval Station Great Lakes, IL, and then at the Naval Station Norfolk, VA. He proved to be a very versatile sailor, able to keep a cool head under pressure; at the end of his training he was assigned to the Emergency, Fire and Rescue duty. In Norfolk he knew a fascinating young woman with mysterious eyes and a passion for american history. They fell in love and got married on June 20, 1992. Jonathan went on with his career in the navy, gaining praise for his courage and his quickness in taking crucial decisions. In 1995 he risked his life to save four men trapped in a sinking ship after a collision, and gained the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. In 1998 he was named Chief Petty Officer. Few months later, on November 12, 1998, he died is a mysterious accident on the USS Atlanta.

Alexandra Dalton Crow
(http://www.painetworks.com/photos/hn/hn1466.JPG)
Alexandra Dalton was born in Norfolk, VA, on August 27, 1969. She has been a lonely child, for she had no siblings, and her parents died when she was very young. She was raised by her grandmother, Rose, who passed away shortly after Colin's birth. Her impressive memory favored her academic achievings, and she earned a scholarship at the Old Dominion University. While she was attending college, she met a native american sailor, who prevented a thief from snatching her bag. She was charmed by his energy, his frank smile and his infectious laughter. When she discovered to be with child, she was quite afraid, because they hadn't planned that, but that very same evening, before she could tell him anything, he asked her to marry him. They were very happy together, and she was devastated when he died. Suddenly everything around her reminded her of people she had loved and lost. Alex decided she could remain in Norfolk no more, and begin looking for a college where she could teach history. The North Eastern Illinois University offered her a chair as instructor, so she and Colin moved to Oak Park in early 1999. She is a very attentive and loving mother, but can rarely completely shake the sadness from her eyes. She has lately been promoted to Asssistant Professor.

Abigail Walters
(http://www.ebonybay.com/photos/public/images_upload/mary_alice_01.jpg)(http://www.painetworks.com/photos/ed/ed1039.JPG)
When they arrived in Oak Park, Mrs. Walters was Alex and Colin's landlady. But she quickly became much more. Having lost her first husband in Vietnam, she could relate and understand the young widow, and decided she had to take care of her and her child, even if her help was unrequited. Maybe her grumpy, but sensible and caring approach to life and people was what they needed after all. Alex felt like she had found another "grandma Rose", and surely felt less lonely, and Colin got a wonderful nanny (he described her as a heart of honey in a coating of grumpiness), and got to know Joshua (15) and Moses (13), her grandchildren, who became his first and best friends in Oak Park.

Christopher O'Brian
(http://ffmedia.ign.com/filmforce/image/article/546/546259/john-c-reilly-20040909065944581-000.jpg)
Three months ago, Alex had a little car accident. The man who bumped into her car was really sorry, since he was distracted by his cell phone; he thoroughly apologized, gave her his insurance data, and asked if he could at least offer her lunch to make up for the trouble. Colin's mom felt compelled to accept, and so got to know Chris O'Brian, of irish descent, detective in the ?? district. They talked, and talked, and everything went so well that she accepted to see him again, this time for a dinner. That day Alexandra was singing to herself when she arrived at home, and Colin was quite surprised. It took him several weeks to figure out what was happening, and when he finally asked her, she decided that it was time to tell him everything and for Chris and Colin to meet. Colin doesn't know yet what to think. Chris seems a cool guy, but things are still a bit awkward between them. Colin has seen his mother smile and laugh like she hasn't in a long long time when she's with Chris, so the detective deserves at least a chance.

Seth Mondsee

Seth is the child of Debra Escalante-Mondsee and Wilhelm Mondsee. His mother is Spanish, and his Father is German. Seth is first generation american, born right in Chicago.

As a result of his heritage he speaks german, spanish, and english with equal fluency. His dad is a lawyer in Merger's and Acquistions, and his mother does some modeling on the side.

Seth is an only child.

Seth doesn't have many friends but is not lacking in acquaintences.

His family is well off. And he has never lacked for a new musical instrament. He has purchased several himself however.

Seth is still growing at at 5'7". But he'll be 6'2" by the time he's done growing. That picture represents him in a year or two. He'll grow into an attractive feat.

(OOC- I will really flesh this out in a bit. But i have to do some work right now.)

Calvin 'Cal' Stewart

Cal's parents are Dennis and Evelyn Stewart, Dennis is an office manager at a moderately successful shipping company, Evelyn is a housewife, who mostly looks after baby Francesca.

Cal was born in Dallas, just like his dad, the family only moved because Dennis was being promoted. Cal was never too happy about moving, but he's gotten used to Oak Park and is beginning to see it in a more favourable light.

Cal has one sibling, his sister Francesca, who was born 6 months ago. He isn't too thrilled to have to  hear her screaming in the middle of the night, but he still loves her all the same, and he's just glad he got to keep his own room.

Cal isn't too close to his Mom, but they get along well. His Dad on the other hand, is like his best friend. They both have a huge passion for American Football, and the TV is officially designated theirs when the Cowboys are playing, and they go to a few  games together [of course this has trickled to nothing after the move to Oak Park, but whenever they visit family in Dallas, there always seems to be a Cowboys game on]. He has been known to argue with his  dad [especially when he annouced the move form Dallas], but other wise they get along fine.

Cal is pretty tall at about 5''9, and he's still got plenty of room to grow, as all the men in his family end up tall [his dad is about 6''5]. He's always been very active and athletic, and it's paid off in his physique. His smile always seems very genuine, and it's always very friendly.

Cal is genuinely a nice guy, he can't stand bullies [and will stand up to them in a heartbeat], and he doesn't care about the social 'grouping' of High School society, and will hang out with people who he gets on with, be they a member of the Football team, or a member of the Science Club. He often speaks his mind, and isn't afraid to share his opinions, which could potentially get him into trouble one day.

Mattew Mannox

Background:

Matt Mannox never knew his father, he ran away with another woman before he was born, and his unmarried and shamed mother Monica Mannox never wanted Matt to know the man. Matt grew up alone, in a nice if somewhat spare apartment with his mother, who worked most days (and a few nights) as a cleaning lady, leaving Matt on his own, usually sitting in his room with a comic book - which he learned to read at age 5 - or playing with his toys, most of them old ones like GI Joe, He-Man, Thundercats and the like that his mother picked up in pawnshops and fleamarkets, like most of the other stuff in their house. Matt loved them anyway, and would spend hour after hour locked in his room making up huge stories about epic battles of good vs evil, always making sure that good won out in the end and no one ever suffered, except for the bad guy of course, a mindset that's been with him ever since. All through his youth he hardly ever played with other kids, and due to it developed a serious problem relating to other people, which came to the forefront when he started school.  No longer capable of isolating himself from the world around him, he found quickly that he preferred his own dream worlds to the real one, and the quiet introverted kid soon turned out to be a prime target to other insecure kids looking for someone to beat around to make themselves look cooler, and plenty of those would turn up over the years. At first Matt couldnt understand why they were acting this way and why they would not leave him alone, often becoming sad and even hysteric from simple teasing, which naturally only led on his tormentors. Over time this turned to anger, and Mattew became violently unstable, flying off the hook from the simplest little thing, running after the usually much more fit bullies screaming his rage to the entire world and unable to do a thing about it, while the bullies - who obviously could have just stopped to beat him up - ran away and mocked him. Due to his outbursts Matt got a reputation on him as an unstable psychopath, and over time as anger turned to something far more dangerous he decided to make their claims a prediction just as well, and one day a little less than a year ago he brought a knife to school and stabbed the first guy that said the wrong thing, giving the other kid a nasty fleshwound in his arm before Matt was tackled and disarmed by two teachers and subsequently expelled.

After half a year in therapy - which cost his mom and her new husband Glenn Bixby a fortune and earned Matt the mutual emnity of his step-father - Matt was brought back to sanity, or a semblance of it at least. No longer filled with anger, it was deemed that he was to return to school, and after a quick summer school study to make up for what he missed and a move to another town to bring them away from both other kids who would always think of Matt as a dangerous psychopath and hardly help with his mental stability as well as their parents, who wouldnt let Matt rejoin his old school anyway, Matt enrolled in Oak Park High, ready for a fresh, clean start. Fate has other ideas for him though, and the darker, supressed side of Matt may emerge yet again, but in a far more dangerous form...

Appearance:

Pale and thin, Matt has always been weak and clumsy, though both that and his paleness may be simply from his tendency to stay inside all the time in his room, playing with his toys when he was younger and these days playing games on his PC (swimming is the only sport he's even okay with, since it reminds him of flying). After his breakdown he started wearing all black often, and usually wears nondescript dark clothes, either all black or with a grey shirt, none of it with any emblems or symbols or the like. He asked his mother and step-father to buy him a black trenchcoat, but they misinterprented it as a desire of his to start bringing guns to school next and shoot all the students who looked at him wrong, and instead got him a gray-black leather pilot's jacket that used to be his uncle's (his step-father's brother that is) which Matt wears occasionally while saving up money for an actual trenchcoat. He's also dyed his normally brown hair black, though he still keeps it short and usually unruly, even though the dyejob took care of his problem with often greasy-looking hair.

Personality:

Despite months of costly therapy Matt is still highly unstable, but his previous rage and sorrow has turned to cold hatred instead, and cold is probably how most would classify Matt in general. He doesnt seem to care about anyone, himself included - though in truth he cares much about his step-brother - and walks through life thesedays with a devil-may-care attitude, having realized by now that nothing's ever going to get much better for him, and that he's not one day going to just wake up and find himself a perfectly different person either. Though he still gets attacked frequently and isnt likely to make friends soon either, he's far more tolerant than he used to be, though that's not all good either, as all that anger and sorrow he'd have unleashed instantly before instead wells up inside him and turns his insides into a festering sore.

When it comes to girls Matt's a clean slate as well, having never danced with or kissed a girl, or even talked to one on a friendly basis, and is highly uncomfortable in the presence of girls. He used to have a deep crush on a girl in his class in his old school, but with no clue as to how he should approach the girl who was way beyond his league anyway, he ended up basically stalking her instead, glaring at her from across the schoolyard at any opportunity he got, and a few times even ended up doing so during class only to be shaken out of his reverie by the teacher to the amusement of the entire class and embarrasment of both himself and the unlucky girl. Once he recieved a note from her saying to meet her behind the school after hours, but paranoia struck and he spent the day and night going over the note with amateur toy detective gear, dusting for prints to figure out if it was sent by her or one of his tormentors looking to set him up. When he approached her a couple of weeks later after finally having built up his courage she revealed that it had in fact been her behind the note, but that she wanted to tell him to ¤§@£ off anyway, and promptly did so. His skill with the opposite sex have not improved since.

Ever since his younger days of playing with action figures depicting superheroes and the like he's had a good interest in both superheroes and villains, as well as other mystic stuff such as vampires, werewolves, ghosts and magic, and any information about anything like it he gobbles up instantly. He keeps a large file on his home computer detailing various sightings of all kinds of paranormals, especially when it comes to their powers. He's always wanted superpowers of his own, though while he tells himself this is so that he could help others, it's truly just a power fantasy, since as everyone knows, with great powers comes great respect and hot chicks... Regardless, there's still a little innocent child inside him that used to stage huge superhero battles on the floor of his old room who has a profound conviction that the good guys have to win in the end and a deep-sated belief that it's actually 'great responsibility' that should be at the end of that sentence... Which of the two parts of him that triumphs remains to be seen.

The last part of his personality that is probably one of the chief reasons these days that people pick on him is an innate sense of superiority that his therapy sessions inadvertedly instilled in him, and his world-view has twisted further because of this, turning him arrogant and aloof when he has no true justification for it. He's slightly smarter than the average kid, so he thinks he's a genius. Others won't have anything to do with him, and so he's just too cool for them, and that's the reason why others pick on him so much, because they can't stand that he's so much better than them. His arrogance tends to turn off people that could otherwise be his friends, including his fellow geeks and freaks, and those that give him a chance to become their friend usually regrets it a few moments later... Hopefully this is just something he needs to outgrow.

Family:

Parents: Monica Mannox (Mother, age 33), Glenn Bixby (step-father, age 42, real father unknown)
Siblings: Daniel Bixby (step-brother, age 6)

Matt has always had a close relationship with his mother, but over the last year that has deteriorated quickly, and they don't talk much any more unless they have to. She still works as a cleaning lady, though lesser hours after her marriage to Glenn, a sucessful real-estate agent. Matt hated Glenn from the moment he walked into the door, and especially so when he married his mother, and though Glenn has never stricktly hated his step-son, buying him a PC and keeping him in his house and all, the relationship has never been good and after Matt's many therapy sessions during the year nearly bankrupted the family Glenn haven't become much fonder of his step-son, referring to him at time as 'the kook', and such when he think Matt can't hear him, and far worse things when he thinks Monica can't hear him. The only good thing to come out of Monica's marriage to Glenn in Matt's opinion apart from their raised standards is his step-brother, Daniel, who is the only person other than his mother that Matt cares about. His grandparents - Monica's parents that is, Glenn's doesnt count in either his or their eyes - passed away some time ago, but before he died Matt had a very close relationship with his grandfather Nathan Mannox, a cop-turned-author who used to take Matt out occasionally for fishing trips and the like, and was the only true father figure Matt has ever known. His death a little over a year ago was probably some of the reason behind Matt's breakdown.

Hi -- I'll be easing my way into the game sometime in the near future (replacement player).

SAMANTHA (Sammy) Jameson. Freshman girl, average/cute in appearance.

She's been a pretty good student up until now, but is a little nervous about the increased academic  demands of high school.  She plays the trombone, and spent the last few weeks before school started at band camp learning routines and music for this year's football season.  She's also in the school's freshmen Concert Band.

She comes from a normal, unremarkable family.  Dad (Steve) works for an architecture firm in the City, and Mom (Kim) started selling "Carefree Cook" kitchen gear a few years ago. Sammy has two older sisters who are always remembered, mostly favorably, by teachers who shape their expectations of Sammy based on them.  The oldest sister ASHLEY is attending the University of Illinois - Chicago and living near the campus, and the second sister STEPHANIE is a popular junior at Oak Park and a member of the school's Drill Team.

Stats to be posted soon.

Secretoracle, would you like me to make stages for Colin too, or it's fine the way it is? I am really liking this part when I have to figure out what my powers do and how they work. :)

And welcome Kat!

Stages is tottally up to you.  It's a fairly simple way for me to advance the characters, but it's also not required.

Do I have a completed version of Colin or just the 15 point version?

Hey, Kat!

Glad you're here!  Can I trade you my Justice card from the Omega Squad CCG for your Charade hologram card?  I'll throw in the (entirely blank) Shadow card.  And wash your car?  :)

Justice is my Hero!  It sounds like you want to get rid of her or something!  In which case I'm holding out for the team-autographed Omega Squad 2000 team photo -AND- the Justice card -AND- the Shadow card for the Charade hologram card.  Do you mind that it was clothespinned to the spokes of my bicycle all summer?

Since I am more than a little jealous, has anybody written down the adventures of the the Omega squad? I'd love to read them.

Cassbackward had a bunch of them at one time.  I do too, but mine are not posted anywhere anymore.
Cassbackward is just giving me a rough time because I tend to get a little bit *cough* obsessed *cough* about my PCs.

In that case, you have found the right GM.  He caters to people who enjoy playing  3-D PCs and who hand him lots and lots of ways to torment their character.  Oh wait, that was praise again, wasn't it? I need to stop doing that.  (ahem) Secretoracle, you Rat!  Bring it on!  I dare you!

Not me.. well not until now.  Honestly this is THE FIRST game on this board I've been in thats been flowing smoothly and hasn't up and vanished in the dead of night.  I'm really getting into all the dorky characters in this game, both PC and NPC.

Villains?? Like SplishSplash the Terror of TubbyTown?  *mock shiver of fright*

-  There now that I've solidly painted the bullseye on my chest I can sit back and relax and wait for the bad things to start happening.  :)

It doesn't have to be pretty.  I'm using it to sweep the competition at the next Gen Con.  Not only does it change into any of the other hero cards; it clones, too!

RPing while parenting?  I'll have to ask you to step over to the curb.  You'll need to stand on one foot, roll a d20 and recite the itsybitsy spider.  If you screw up the song or roll a 1 I'm going to have to impound your characters.

The Reality Police are harsh here.  Luckily there are trains leaving for the real world every fifteen minutes.  ;)

Actually, I mentioned the CCG only because it came up in one of the Matthew Maddox's posts.  According to Matt, the Omega Squad CCG sucks.  I was tickled.

Oh, you actually play with your cards, not just stick them in a binder and hope for OS collectible value.  I heard that the CCG isn't any good.
OK, deal.
I suppose I can put the Justice card up next to the action figure in the display case.

Heee-hee.  ;) (do note that that was stated without knowing much at all about your characters and is in no way meant to be a diss on them, you, or your GM... actually the stuff I read sounded pretty cool)

Here is Colin's second stage, as requested. I also noticed that the previous version had two skill points unused. My math is not as good as it was.

________________________________________

COLIN CROW

PL: 2  (30 pp)

ABILITIES:   STR: 8 (-1)  DEX: 10 (0)   CON: 10 (0)   INT: 12 (+1)   WIS: 14 (+2)   CHA: 12 (+1)

SKILLS:  Acrobatics 3 (+3), Craft (Artistic) 3 (+4), Diplomacy 4 (+5), Gather Info 2 (+3), Knowledge (Art) 1 (+2), Knowledge (Current Event) 1 (+2), Knowledge (Popular Culture) 1 (+2), Knowledge (Streetwise) 1 (+2), Notice 5 (+7), Sense Motive 5 (+7), Survival 2 (+4)

FEATS:  Defensive Roll (1), Eidetic Memory, Jack-of-All-Trades, Teamwork (1)

POWERS: Unknown (10 PP)

COMBAT:  Attack 0  [Unarmed -1 (Bruise)]   Defense 10 (10 flat-footed)   Init  0

SAVES:  Toughness 1 (0 flat-footed)  Fortitude 1  Reflex 1  Will 3

Abilities 6  +  Skills 7 (28 ranks)  +  Feats 4  +  Powers 10  +  Combat 0  +  Saves 3  –  Drawbacks 0 = 30 / 30

It's funny that their CCG sucks because, well, they weren't what you'd call a super super group.  They had morale issues and crazy personal lives and moments of, um, moral uncertainty.  And they kept getting lost in time or in other dimensions.  I guess that's what you get when the federal government--they were a federally sponsored team--lets its paranormal defense fund go to the lowest bidder.

Yea I read about Justice's brother turning out to be evil (then a clone?) and them fighting a terrible battle trashing like half the city as such things tend to do, then going off to get drunk with a teammate, only to have to be escorted back home. Sounded like real fun stuff actually, and got me totally stoked for this game.

That was not the first time the ladies had been escorted home by the police, was it????

I promise not to go soooooo far overboard with this game....  :spittake:  ...Who the hell am I kidding.
