He went by rory's house after school to talk to his folks and no one had been home. He'd called Rory's house about ten times and gotten the answering machine each time. The hospital wouldn't give him any information because he wasn't family. When the phone rang he literally pounced on it to answer it. His mom had understood his concern and tried to be of some comfort. Matt's stepfather had been silent on the subject, instead decided that tonight would be a good night to go have a few beers. "Hello?" Matt said as he answered the phone. The person on the other end had obviously been crying, and still was. Her weak sobs and sniffles took a little time to get under control. "Matt, it's me Shelia. Rory's sister." Matt had heard his mother like this, on the ragged edge of a long cry. Tears mostly gone, but sorrow still there. "Rory died a little while ago. His heart gave out. Doctors said the strain of whatever happened to him was too much for his heart, and..." She has to pause for a minute to let her voice come back to her, "He had a dozen heart attacks, nothing they did seemed to work. He was in so much pain, I'm just glad he's not hurting..." She sniffles a few times, but she's cried out. "I'm just glad he's not in anymore pain." Title: Re: Chapter 6-3, Matt and the phone call. "I- I was next to him when he-- when it happened. I'm sorry, there was this stupid bully, probably picking on me, if I hadn't been there maybe Rory wouldn't have-- have--" he chokes up, unable to continue. "I--" then he remembers Rory's likely last words. "He told me to tell you and your folks that he loved them, and that-- that you shouldn't worry. Shelia says through the phone, "I know the boy that attacked him. He wasn't after you, he's been picking on Rory for a long time. I'm glad you were there, with him. I wanted to thank you, Rory's never had anyone he could really call a friend, until he met you. You've been so good to him." Her tears have found their way back to her, and she begins to cry again, "You made him very happy, and I'll never be able to thank you enough for all you did for him." "I-- I'm sorry," is all he manages to get out before he hangs up, curls up in a ball and falls to sleep, wishing that he'd been able to help Rory somehow, and thinking about what Colin said previously... |
