It's been a rough couple of days for Colin, and he's starting to feel like some kind of weight is settleing onto his shoulders.  He wanted to talk to his mother, and the recent news of Rory's death has made that seem more urgent.

"Mom?"

She is in her little study, correcting her students' tests. Colin sits down on the little sofa behind her table, waiting for her attention.

"Do you have five minutes? There's... something I'd like to talk with you about."

"Sure honey."  She says, setting down her pen and glasses.  "What's on your mind?"

Colin remains silent for a few awkward moments. He thought it would be easier to tell. But the moment he tells her it'll become really true, and he's a little scared of that.

"Mom, there's something strange happening to me. I don't know if I am R-factor positive or anything... but it looks like I have... talents."

He pauses, looking worryingly at her reaction.

Colin's mother comes out from behind her desk to sit on the couch with Colin, "Honey, what doy you mean.  Does this have anything to do with what happened to that boy at school yesterday?"

"Somewhat. It all started a couple weeks ago. I met new people, got new friends, and when I shaked hands with some of them... Something happened. The first time it was like a vision of the past, the second one like an electrical shock. Then there was this boy who had been beaten by bullies, and when I touched him.. he got better. He was coughing blood, then I touched his forehead, felt a sort of discharge, and in a moment he was up on his feet again! I had a vision, looking in a mirror, as if I could see more than what actually was there. Another friend of mine lost a... a thing, and I had a vision telling me exactly where it was and how it got there. At the labs there were people hurt, there was this woman who couldn't breathe, and I touched her and she started breathing again! The girl that was at the hospital when Chris came to get me... the doctor forund nothing wrong with her, because I had already healed her. But then Rory..."

All of this came as a river bursting a dam, but thinking of Rory Colin still feels a lot of pain. He squints and clenches his fists.

"Rory become a giant red beast, he got lost in his fury, and his heart... burst. I tried to help him I tried to use this thing to fix his heart, I thought I did it, but it didn't work. I coul feel his pain, I could feel his heart in my hands.. and it wasn't enough. He died, mom, and I really, really don't know what to do. This is bigger than me. It's too big."

Alex hugs her son to her and tries to comfort him.  "Sweetheart, you're just a child, you can't be expected to perform miracles.  Your father used to say that he couldn't save everyone, but it was trying that made him who he was."  She begins to choke up some with her own well of emotions, "You're a lot like him that way."  she holds onto Colin a bit longer, "These things you see, you're sure it's not just the light playing tricks on you, you're sure you see things?"

Colin hugs her back.

"I've  seen a boy on fire. I've seen a kind of old movie showing the two guys that took my friend's... science project and where they put them. I went there, and there it was. Sometimes I see a blackbird, that seems to tell me things. It doesn't talk it just... inspire me? Mom, either I really see those things, or I am really crazy. And I'm not sure which of the two I'd like the most."
It just takes a moment to sink in.
"Daddy really said that?" he asks, looking at her with wet eyes. "I've seen him too, just for a moment, at the labs. I was thinking that I was saving people from a fire, and there he was, looking at me. Just for an instant."

"Oh honey.  Maybe you should just not think too hard about this.  It might just be something that will go away on it's own if you let it.  I know that sounds selfish, but you're too young to be getting involved in this kind of stuff."

"But I can't help thinking that if I knew how to use it, maybe I could have really saved Rory. What if something happened to you, or Chris, or Mrs. Walters? I'd want to be able to help you. Can you help me find someone who can teach me how it's meant to be used?"

"Oh baby."  She says, almost crushing him against her.  she holds him a long time before he answers.  "I'll see what I can do.  No promises though, okay.  Promise me no matter what, you'll be careful."

Colin remembers Chris' words and is tempted to give the same answer to his mom. Then he decides it would be a bad idea.

"Ok, mom. I'll be. Thank you." he lets out a deep deep sigh, as if a huge weight had been taken off his shoulders. "Thank you for not freaking out. It was killing me and I didn't know how to tell you."

"Coliln."  She says, looking into his eyes, "You can tell me anything.  Don't ever think there is something you can't tell me."

Colin just hugs her again.

Have I told you recently that you're the coolest mom in town? Probably even in the state."

"Have I told you that you're the best boy a mom could have?"

Colin kisses his mom on the cheek and then slips out of her arms.

"I gotta go. I have to finish this essay for Mr. Monnitoff. Then Mrs. Walters wanted me to drop by and tell her what's happening at my school. I'm afraid she wants to tell me to be wary of "those dangerous paranormals". Josh told me she had this talk with him last week. But I'll be right on time for dinner. Oh, another thing."

He gets out his camera from his back pocket and quicky snatches a pic of her before she can react.

"Gotcha!" he laughs as he runs down the corridor.
