Title: Chapter 12-5, Costumed Adventure
Post by: secretoracle on September 27, 2006, 10:35:04 AM
Megan had worked on her costume for a good bit of last night.  Even though she could do things much faster then normal, sewing wasn't her strong suite.  It was finished though, and as she got home after practice she went to her room to drop off her books and get everything she was going to need.  She wanted to test the outfit to make sure it wouldn't fly apart at high speed, which would certainly be embarrasing if anyone saw her.

She stood in her room for a moment and looked at the costume.  She thought about the idea of wearing it under her cloths as opposed to just keeping it with her and changing into it.  She practiced switching outfits a few times until she could do it at blinding speeds.

The sun was going down when she left the house.  A few blocks away she donned her costume and took off.  There was certainly a freedom of wearing a disguise and moving at incredible speeds.

OOC: Anyplace in particular you'd like to go or anything you'd like to try?

Megan was rather proud of what she had done based on the Halloween costume that had been the inspiration for her costume.  Though the store sold costume was made to be sexy and thus didn’t cover very much, the coming cold of late Fall and Winter in this part of the country had led Megan to alter one to be full body suit with similar markings.  She still had one unaltered that she might consider wearing in warmer months, but that was for another time.

The suit was yellow, with black and white checkered stripes running down the arms and legs.  The matching yellow mask would cover most of her face and all of her hair, though she had fixed the back to allow a ponytail to hang out, but had fixed part of a brown wig fixed in a ponytail there to try to further disassociate herself from this costumed identity.  With the mask she had some skiing goggles she was going to wear to help with the wind from running fast.  She hadn’t found any good boots just yet that she felt she could run it well, so had gone with yellow running shoes instead.

Once out on her normal “run” and changed, she went towards the park first, trying to use some dark parts of a running path to make quick sprints at as close as she could get to full speed to see how the costume held up.  Once satisfied that it wasn’t going to tear apart easily, she then starts off towards a part of town where the average income was a few rungs lower than in her parents neighborhood, given they were in one of the nicest sections of town.  Sticking to less busy streets, she is looking to see what might be happening that she might be able to get involved in, trying to think of a name to call herself should anyone ask her as well.

(ooc I think that might cover what I plan to do, also for anyone that is interest in the costume that was the inspiration, here it is:

The less affluent side of Oak Park is closer to Chicago.  There are some areas where Oak Park begins to fade into Chicago that have some issues, one of which is drugs.

A few of the corners have permanent residents, that are low level dealers.  Megan makes her way around, getting a feel for who is where.  while passing by an alley she hears a tremendous bang.  Peeking into the alley she sees a police officer pinned under a garbage dumpster and some one standing a few feet away, "Arrest that shit motherfucker."  he yells, then he picks the dumpster up and tosses it a few feet away, leaning down into the officer's face, "That shit look like it hurt."  he says poking the officer's chest with a finger.

Megan feels her heart start to beat quicker as she sees the scene before her.  She had hoped to find something a bit easier first, like another purse snatching or something, not some incredibly strong guy beating up on a cop.  But now that she was here and seeing it, she knew she couldn’t just run away and ignore it.  The only thing she could really hope to do was surprise the guy and get him to chase her, maybe she could run him around till the officer got enough back up here for the police to catch him.

Taking a rapid deep breath, Megan runs forward till she is next to the guy and swings at him as hard and fast as she can, not expecting her punch to do much but get his attention.  Just in case he didn’t feel anything, she yelled out.  “Hey!  No picking on cops while I’m around!”

Megan zips past the attacker, cracking him a good shot as she flies past.  He spins around twice before falling to the ground.  As he gets up on all fours he looks around for who hit him.  "Hey sweet pants."  He says smiling, "How about you come back over here and try that again."

Megan sees the officer grab his radio and call for backup, but it will still be a few minute before help can arrive.

Megan was a bit surprised that her punch had managed to knock him off his feet, but the fact that he otherwise seemed to not be particularly phased did worry her.  â€œYou think you can handle more?”   She asks with more confidence than she really feels as she waits for him to get back on his feet and then starts towards him again.  But as she draws close, she suddenly turns away as she sidesteps, trying to make herself a harder target and get him to lunge towards her as she starts away from where the cop is lying.

(OOC: hold action till he is up and then run at him and turn away.  Her standard action will be full defense, is that the right term?  don’t have my book with me, so can’t remember, basically she is trying to make herself harder to hit)

Megan waits until he's on his feet, then closes the distance.  As she sees his arm come out for the attack she shifts direction and speeds up.  The attack goes wide, but she feels the air from it as she passes.  The thug stumbles a few paces and slams into the wall, leaving a fist mark in the building where he connected.

"That's funny speedie."  he says, righting himself.  He looks around, then up.  "It's been fun, but I gotta go."  He squats slightly, ready for a leap.

Megan stops at the mouth of the alleyway, somewhat relieved that the fight was ending, starting to second guess this whole superhero thing if she was going to have to regularly face guys like this one.  “Well, another time then.”  She quips back as she grabs a nearby garbage can lid and throws it at him.

Megan throws the lid of the trashcan and the thug leaps, easily avoiding it.  A moment later he's on the roof of a nearby building and gone.

A few moments later Megan hears the sirens of approaching back up.

"Thank you."  The officer's voice is strained as he speaks, "You probably saved my life."

Megan looks over at the officer as she gives him a smile that hides the small doubts she was feeling at the moment.  “Hey, no problem.  Sounds like your pals are almost here, so they should be able to take care of you.  Be safe.”   She says as she then starts off, trying to get out of the area quickly and hide till she is sure things quite down some.

Back at home, in the safety and comfort of her room Megan sees the news, and the report of her encounter wth the thug in the alley.  The news crew is at the hospital interviewing a woman who is crying, "If she hadn't been there my husband wouldn't be alive."  The woman looks into the camera, "Thank you, whoever you are."

"The unidentified hero is apparently new to the city, and the local authorities have no comment at this time.  Back to you Carol"

Megan's costume seemed to hold up alright, and it certainly gave her some security having her identity covered.  Now she just needed something to say if anyone asked her who she was.

On the way back home, Megan had been thinking about what Kel’s grandfather had said.  He had called her a superhero, but she sure didn’t feel like one.  Maybe a super klutz, who happened to move really fast, after that fight with the ninja or whatevers in Kel’s yard.

But as she watched news broadcast, she felt a certain feeling of pride knowing that she had helped ensure that police officer’s wife wasn’t another widow of an officer killed in the line of duty.  She hoped he would be alright and not in the hospital for to long, but was now feeling a bit bad that the guy who had hurt him had gotten away.

Lying back gently in her bed, she thought about what she had managed to do tonight.  Other than moving really fast, she wasn’t sure what else she could do, she sure wasn’t impervious to harm.  But somehow she had hit that strong guy in the alley so hard he had spun around and fallen down, and she had knocked down and maybe even out one of those ninja.  She hadn’t noticed being any stronger, so it didn’t quite make sense at the moment.  Her speed seemed to help her avoid being hit a fair amount, but as the soreness in her back reminded her, that wasn’t full proof.

Opening her science textbook, she began reading, her hands turning the pages even faster than she had been over the last several days since she had learned how fast she could read and do other things.
