Title: Chapter 18-4, Kel and his Super Friends
Post by: secretoracle on October 25, 2006, 07:39:16 PM
Kel had made arrangements with Sylvia and Sammy to meet him near the school late on Friday night to see what kind of super heroing they could get into.

Kel stands in a shadowed area of the school grounds, just light enough for someone who's looking for him will see him.  He checks the belt he's wearing again, it's slightly large and took a bit of tightening to get snug but it looks good, almost like a utility belt sadly most of the pouches are empty, with the exception of one holding a small multitool, a pocket knife, and one even has a power bar or two.  Kel lifts one to his mouth, and lifts the mask up so he can eat, he grumbles as he munches away, finished he shoves the wrapper into one of the empty pockets and then brings down his ski mask that allows only his eyes to show.  He fiddles with his grandfather's old helmet, trying to tighten it a bit, and then running his fingers along the rim smiling as he thinks about how awesome it must look.  He straightens out his leather jacket, now removed of all its patches, he pats down both his shoulders where he's added a new patch he had a bit of trouble constructing earlier in the day, it was two D's linked together in honor of the moniker he has chosen: Devil Dog.  He finally looks down at his fatigues and his boots, where he covered over the steel spikes as best as he could so that nothing would glint under the street lights.  He looks around and then says, "Where are those two..."

Only a day or so has passed since Sylvia told her parents about her powers, which spares her the indignity of showing up in one of Mitzi's half-finished spandex prototypes, but it doesn't spare her the indignity of being dropped off in the family car.  Carolyn lets her out and flashes a toothy smile at Kel, the kind of smile she gave Donnie the first time she dropped Sylvia off at his house.  "Hey, Kel," she says in that casual-but-dead-serious way.  "You guys give me a call if anything happens, you hear?"

"We'll be okay, Momda," Sylvia says, quietly aggravated by the safety drill.  "See you later."

"Remember.  Every hour on the hour."

"Every hour on the hour," Sylvia repeats and scurries over to Kel's side.  She waves frantically until Carolyn drives away and then wipes her hand down her face.  "Slay me," she tells Kel.

She's dressed different from her usual:  black turtleneck, jeans, a black wool peacoat.  But it's not a superhero costume by any means, more like late-series Buffy on a depressive streak.

He looks around and then says, "Where are those two..."

An acorn bounces off his head.  Funny thing, there are no oak trees close enough for any acorns to be dropping on him.  A sort of familiar voice calls down to him from above.
"Hey hero... cool costume."

[OOC:  was Sammy able to get the costume from the drama club costumers, or is she still grubbing an outfit together?]

Kel, feels like dying from embarassment for the world, since he knows that the world's soon to be greatest heroes are about to enter their first patrol, after some of them are getting dropped off by their parents.  He looks at Sylvia and says, "I'll take it under advisement."  He looks around and says, "All that's left is Sammy...she might fly.."  He gazes up at the sky.  Then the acorn hits him and he looks up at Sammy, "Hey there, come down here and join us."  He can't make her throughout the darkness but hopes she has some sort of costume to hide her identity.

Sammy drops down to the ground.  She's wrapped up tightly in a thick old wool blanket.
[OOC, giving Secretoracle another couple of minutes to say yes or no.]
"Hi Syl."  She notices Kel looking with some trepidation at the blanket wrapped around her.  "I'm freezing my butt off out here.  Aren't you cold?"  She looks around.  "Are we it?"

Title: Re: Chapter 18-4, Kel and his Super Friends

Kel shakes his head and pats the leather jacket, "Has a lining."  Then he nods and continues, "Yea, jus the three of us, the others aren't exactly the best for this sort of work, well now that Cal's gone anyway.  I figured we'd just head off towards the worse off areas of Oak Park, near Chicago you know, and just patrol around.  Also, with a little bit of luck we might be able to find out more on Superman dealers."

"Hi," Sylvia says, thinking about how useful it'd be to be able to fly out of the house.  No family car if you can fly.

"OK. "  Sammy fishes around under the blanket, and a hand emerges holding a white domino mask, which she slips on over her eyes.    She says defensively, "It's the only mask I could find at the dollar store that wasn't Blue's Clues or Dora the Explorer."  The blanket is still wrapped firmly around her body.

"So, what's the plan?  Is somebody going to scout out perps and lead the others to them, or do you just want to wander around together and hope we find someone silly enough to take on the three of us?"

Kel looks around and then says, "I was hoping that we might be able to scout out the perps and then take them down while no one is looking than leave some anonymous tips with the police, it seems like the easiest route and the best way to make sure that some form of justice is served."  He cracks his knuckles a bit as he stands there waiting, then adds, "It's a bit of a trek towards where they all congregate but we should be able to make it there pretty easily."

"Alrighty then.  Let me get rid of this blanket and we can get started.  Don't laugh, ok?"

Hovering slightly in the air, Samantha removes the wool blanket to reveal a very delicate looking costume which is much sturdier than it appears.  From just a few feet away it seems to be made of little more than a long length of sheer white cloth draped in such a way to flow gracefully with every passing breeze, and that indeed the whole thing could come tumbling off with one careless motion on the wearer's part.  On very close examination it  can be seen that the whole thing is held together with an almost invisible body suit, and that certain "strategic areas" aren't going to budge without a whole lot of persuasion.  She looks a bit chilly.

Almost defensively she says, "I'm testing out the idea. I'm thinking maybe I should save this for warmer weather."

Kel nods, "It looks good, very appropriate."  No one can see due to his mask but he is smiling, when he looks at her he sees a hero not some crazy guy with some hope and luck which is what he saw when he looked in the mirror before leaving.

Sylvia oohs appropriately.  She pulls her turtleneck up and feels grateful for the coziness.

Heading towards the imaginary line where Oak Park ends and Chicago begins the group is on the lookout for some unsavory types that might be selling drugs.

After scouting a few likely spots they settle on a pair that might be just what they're looking for.  One is on teh street and the other in a nearby alley.  The street man is the salesman and the guy in the alley is who delivers.  Customers approach the man on the street, give him cash, and then he signals the man in the alley.  The buyer circles around the block and pick up from the delivery man.

Kel looks over the pair from a darkened alley across the street and then says, "Alright, looks like these guys are dealing in something, and they have more than a few customers."  He looks around at the area and says, "I'd say Sylvia goes up like she's going to buy it.  Then Sammy, you get the drop on the supplier, while I get ahold of the actual salesman."

Sylvia frowns and looks down at her ensemble.  "Do I look like a drug user?"  But having reached her own conclusion, she looks at the other two.  "Never mind.  I've got it handled."

Sylvia thinks about that, expression scrunching.  "Is it a crime if I buy drugs, but I'm not really buying drugs?  'Cause I won't have real money?  'Cause it's not really me?"

Provided Sammy doesn't raise an objection, Sylvia pulls up the collar on her coat and strolls closer.  As she approaches the street man, her shape shimmers and flexes until, in her place, a drunken college-age couple stumbles along the sidewalk, giggling and pawing at each other.  They get close enough to the street man that Sylvia, hidden by them, can hear what he's saying, provided he speaks up.  Then, stage two, a dinged-up compact car rolls down the street, radio blasting something the scrawny white guys in the front seats have no business playing at that volume.  "Hey," says one, leaning a little out the passenger window, and flashes the street man a beer-buzz smile.

Trailing Sylvia, Sammy drifts along above the level of normal city street lights (up 20 ft at least).  People never look up; they're either looking straight ahead or down.  They miss all kinds of things by not looking up, including, she hopes, herself.

"All right," croons the buyer.  "Set us up with a couple of tickets."  He pulls a few bills out of his wallet and passes the money to the street man.

Kel loops around the block and sticks to the shadows so that's he's across the street from the dealer, in the alcove of a bad building.  He watches and waits for the scene to unfold, prepped to get the drop on the salesman.

The car, and the two potheads inside, cruise away and around the block.  Sylvia stays behind her masquerade of a smooching couple and keeps an eye on Kel, just in case he wants to signal her to bluff the guy holding the drugs.

Kel lays in wait, ears waiting to pick up the sound of a scuffle in the alleyway, then gets ready to make his own pounce in one solid leap to the drug dealer.

Sammy preps herself by putting up the shield.

When it seems like the time is right -- Kel is in position to take the dealer, Sylvia is in position to do whatever to the supplier and has the suppliers attention --  Sammy aims a blast at the supplier, hoping to knock him down or drive him into a wall.

Sammy fires a blast, hitting the supplier and sending him into the wall.  A second later he slumps to the pavement unconscious.

The salesman turns at the sound, to see what happened.

"Well," Kel said plainly, "Two down, dozens more to go.  Let's tie 'em up and make a call into the cops."  He starts to drag the seller's body into the alleyway and then looks at Sylvia, "Hey uh, Syl...what street are we on?.."

Sylvia takes the hint but looks, perhaps, unhappy about it.  She pulls out Carolyn's cell phone and almost calls 911, then changes her mind.  She calls Colin's house instead.

They notify the cops and move onto the next target.  They have some good success the rest of the evening, although they find no other Superman dealers they do manage to shut down several drug dealers before heading back to the safer environs of Oak Park.

Sylvia, still kind of swept away by Kel's bold leap across the road and hasty kicking of ass, is all aglow when he puts his arm around her.  "Name?  You mean like a football team?"
