Sarah got her mom and dad together, making sure her brother was no where nearby, to discuss the fact that she had super powers.  After dinner, while Marty was out skate boarding with the guys, she sat them down.

Sarah sits down across from her parents and looks at them waiting patiently.  Her mouth opens but nothing comes out.  Mom! Dad!  I'm a superhero!  Woohoo!  Oh not what you were going for? 

Sarah closes her mouth without a sound.  She tries again... The voice of an alien in my head is telling me I'm a galactic space ranger!  ... and fails.

She stands up and paces around a little.  "Mom, Dad... a lot of stuff has been happening this year.  I mean, I know we talked a little about highschool was going to be different but not this different.  A lot of weird stuff has been going on at school and I know you've been worried."

Sarah's thought process runs dry and she looks at her parents hopefully for a minute.  Come on smartass brain chip in anytime here.    -*shrug*

MOM: "Is there something you're worried about sweetie?"

DAD: "Sarah, if there is something bothering you, you know that you can always talk to us.  Your mom and I have tried to not pester you, to let you have some space.  We know this year has been really stressful, we're sorry if you thought we weren't concerned.  We are, but the school has assured the parents that everything is under control and they're doing everything they can to keep the students safe."

The school can't handle whats going on... - Try being positive.  For a change.

"Um, no... no I'm not really worried.  Well I am a little but I just wanted you to know that I am safe and not mixed up in any of those drugs.  Me and some other people have been trying to find out whats been going on though.  Where did these drugs come from and what do all the other crazy things going on mean?  Oh and I might start working on the school paper!"

Right on track as always....
"But that's not what I really wanted to talk to you about.  I... uh... I've changed this year.  Something new has happened to me and I was kind of wondering if you knew why?"  Sarah swallows and rubs her hands together in nervousness.  "I've got these p... skills that just kind of showed up around the beginning of the year.  You know how for years I've been reading all those psychic magazines and playing at trying to read your minds and levitate objects or fly or anything else I could think of and the two of you always kind of new it was really just a game?  Wishful thinking.  And I guess it really just was.  Something to distract me since we moved out of Chicago."

Her pacing has moved her unintentionally behind the chair and near the doorway, half ready to run.  "Well I kind of got my wish."

Her parents have blank loos, broken only by the occassional blink.

MOM: "What are you trying tosay honey, that you can read minds?"

Sarah sighs, "No Mom, I can't read minds.  That would be better I think.  Then I wouldn't be standing here feeling like I'm going to throw up.  I'd already know what you think and I could just chicken out and avoid the whole conversation."  She stops and takes a breath, holding onto the back of the couch.
"But... I can do something else."

She steps into the empty space in front of the chair and brings her staff into being.  She gives it a quick little twirl before letting it fade out once more.    Cat has left the bag!

DAD: "What was that?"

MOM: "Ah, Are you doing okay?  You don't seem happy, you've been kind of talking about something like this forever.  You don't seem as happy as I would have expected."

Sarah studies her parents closely looking for any hint of something... hidden about their responses over her power.  Would I see it in their eyes if they had a power?  Will they tell me?

"This," Sarah replies while summoning her staff once more, "is a staff of... well, mental energy as far as I can figure.  It's intangible when I swing it but can still block something thrown at me." Or shot at me... but lets not worry them more right now.  She smiles a little, "So you don't have to worry about some boy making inappropriate advances anymore."  

She turns to her mom, "It's a lot more complicated than the way I dreamed about it.  This just showed up one day with no instructions or explanation.  I always fantasized about some little talent... a little flashy but nothing dangerous.  You know, almost like a fancy card trick or being able to play an instrument really well."  She sighs, thinking, If I had devoted my time to card tricks or music would I be in this mess?

"Is there... would there be a family reason I might have gotten this talent?"  She looks at both her parents hopeful for an explanation.  Or maybe something happened to me in the lab like Megan... and Cal?

DAD: "Not from my side of teh family."  he looks at mom, "I can't think of anything from your side either.  Can you?"

MOM: "No, no one in my family ever had powers before.  If they did no one ever mentioned it."

OOC: They seem confused, but not freaked out.

Sarah slumps into the chair, letting her staff vanish once more.  "Well then I'm not sure where this came from." Can't mention the lab without talking about Megan.  "Sometimes I've wished I could just forget I had this.  Wished it had never happened and just go back to reading journals and playing video games."

She looks up, a little reassured about her parents reaction.
"But I can't just ignore this gift.  It's something that's part of me now.  I can use it to help other people stay safe.  That's what I want to do with it.  I have friends trying to find out who's behind all the trouble at school and I can help keep them safe.  But I didn't want to sneak behind your backs.  I don't want to lie to you about my life."

DAD: "Honey.  I think it's great that you have this opportunity, but you're a little young to be playing super hero, don't you think?"

MOM: "Not to mention it's dangerous.  I'm impressed by your motives, but I think we'd feel better if you maybe waited until you were a little older before you tried to be a super hero."

"I'm not trying to be a superhero.  Not really.  I'm just standing up for my friends, and for what's right.  But mostly I'm doing this for myself.  If I sit around and do nothing and the school falls apart or my friends are hurt I'll never forgive myself.  I'll feel like a coward for the rest of my life."  Sarah felt stupid asking permission to fight villains like she was asking for an extension to her curfew.  "I promise I'll be careful and I'm not doing this alone." 

Sarah's parents look at each other and dad shrugs.

DAD: "You had better be careful.  I still don't like the idea, but if it's what you want I'm not going to be the one to stand in your way."

MOM: "Does this have something to do with this boy, Colin?"

She smiles when Dad gives in.  And I was worried!  Piece of cake.  "I will be careful.  I promise!"  Then the question about Colin...

Sarah lushes furiously.  "Um... well not exactly.  He's well.  We're friends.  He asked me to the Homecoming dance."

DAD: "Have I met this boy?"  dad asks, in his usual manner.

MOM: "That's great honey.  I'm glad you're becoming more outgoing.  These powers of yours though.  Is there anything we should know about, or worry about?"

Sarah shakes her head a little nervously, "No Dad, you haven't met Colin yet.  But you can.  I'm sure it wont be a problem.  He's really nice.  I'll let him know tomorrow that you'd like to talk.  He might even know already." WTF??? Shut up! "I mean, he's pretty courteous so he probably expects you'll want to meet him." 

Sarah nodes to her Mom, "Yeah, well... I've been thinking about it a lot lately and I needed to get out of my rut and actually do something.  Megan Howell and I have been hanging out lately.  You remember Megan right?  She encouraged me to try and get more involved at school.  As far as my powers go... I don't know what to tell you or what you need to know.  I don't know if this is all I can do.  I'm going to help make our school a better place and I've got some friends who can make that happen.  Really I'm just pitching in compared to some of the incredible things they can do."

MOM: "Well, just be careful.  We must sound like a broken record."  mom smiles and gives Sarah a hug.

DAD: "You're not going out at night and going after those drug dealers are you?  I've heard about that in the news, tell me that's not something you're doing."

"Um... no Dad, I've never been after drug dealers but we did help a homeless man who was hurt and found a missing girl."  replies Sarah hoping that this sounded a lot better then drug dealers... who she would probably be dealing with soon enough.  It's not a lie... though I suppose there are a couple of omissions in there.   

DAD: "For the time being, lets not mention this to Marty.  The last thing we need is for him to start trying to fly."

Sarah nods vigorously.  "Definitely.  I don't think his stunts need any more motivation."  She gives her parents a thoughtful look.  "Do you think there's any way that you could look into our family and see if anyone has unexpected talents?  I'm just kind of curious.  Or maybe I could.  Half the family already knows I've been nuts over the stuff."

MOM: "I suppose.  I don't think there's anything out of the ordinary on either side, but if it'll help, search all you want."

DAD: "So, of course you know this means we'll have to worry about you even more now."  He smiles as he says it.
