Samantha went to Mr. Heeps room to check and see if he had anything new he could tell her about the bees.  Since TJ had transferred out she thought she would have to go see Mr. Heep to get any more information.

When she goes into his classroom she is greeted by a strange assortment of gadgets on all the work tables and shelves.  Mr. Heep is busy looking over something when she arrives, intently studying the device and oblivious to her arrival.

[knock knock]

Once Sammy has the teacher's attention, she enters the room.

"Hi, Mr. Heep.  What's all this stuff?  I didn't think the science fair was until January."

"This is all the stuff the police found in the physics store room, minus anything that looked like a gun.  Some of this stuff is right out of the super villain handbook."

"So, here to learn about your bees I take it?"  He says, going to his filing cabinet.  "With TJ gone I was wondering who was going to come get this."  He gives her the folder.  "The only thing I found that might give any clue as to the origin of the bees was some pollin from a rare flower.  It's a sort of orchid, and the only example of it would be at the botanical gardens over in River Forest."

She takes the folder from him, but stops and looks him in the eye before she opens it, because he said something that set off her alarm system.  "You were wondering who was going to come get this?  Who else was looking at the bees except for TJ and me?"  She's really wondering if he has somehow caught on to the fact that there is a group of students working together doing... she hopes he doesn't guess what.

"Well, you brought me the one and then TJ was working on the other one.  Do you want the stuff on the 'love goo' too or should I expect someone else to come get that?"

The internal alarm system is screaming now.  " 'Love goo' -- I never heard of that before.  Is it connected to the bee pollen?  Or is that just something else TJ was playing with?"

"Something TJ brought in.  Can you ask around with his friends, maybe find out if anyone still wants the analysis results.  It's related to a few outbreaks of bizarre behavior and violence."

"I'll take it now.  I know some of his friends.  They were the ones who suggested I bring things to him.  If they don't want it, I'll bring it back to you."

She idly wanders over to one of the work tables and stares at the device laying on it.  "It seems kind of funny that the police left all of this with you.  Don't they normally take evidence away with them to be looked at by their own experts?  Or are you one of their experts?"

"They were interested in weapons.  None of this struck them as a weapon, but the principal told them I'd look it over and send anything that was dangerous back to them.  So far nothing dangerous.  Just a lot of old 60s and 70s villain gadgets.  Smoke generators, a sort of x-ray goggle device, something that sort of scrambles motion detectors.  someone had a field day."

Sammy remembers that Mr. Heep had spoken before about supervillain gadgets and plots.  "Are Villains a hobby of yours, then?  You seem to know a lot about the things they did, especially in the 60s and 70s.  You said something about the bees, and now this..."  She grins at him.  "It's okay.  I won't tell if you're in the Blue Blaze Irregulars.  My dad carries a membership card."

Mr. Heep chuckles.  "Well, you have to promise to keep it a secret.  I wouldn't want the whole school finding out."

"Seriously?  I mean, seriously, are you interested in villain gadgets, or just anybody's gadgets so long as they're cool?  Because I was thinking it would be awfully nice if somebody could figure out who is behind the bees, and who is behind that superman drug, and who is behind who knows what else since this school year started.  If someone smart who also knew about villains was looking into this, I bet it could all be straightened out in no time, and we could all quit worrying about what might happen next instead of worrying about our next math test. " 
She looks at him pleadingly. 
"I'm not the smartest person in school, but I work hard to make up for what I don't just naturally get.  And I don't know much about supervillains and that kind of stuff, but if you do, and are willing to start to teach me what you know, I'd be glad to learn if it meant all of this could be stopped.  I'm tired of being scared.  Please?"

"Well, I'd be happy to help you out.  As for gadgets, I've always been kind of interested in them.  I'm interested in al the stuff that's been happening here too.  So, maybe we can figure some of it out."

"Cool!  So what does this one do?"

Sammy proceeds to get her first lesson in electronics, or physics, or whatever it is that Mr. Heep starts with.
