Title: Chapter 26-3, Devil Dog and Otto Octavious.
Post by: secretoracle on December 12, 2006, 10:57:08 PM
Kel had been doing his homework.  Some news clippings and a few internet searches and he had a lead he wanted to check out concerning a missing item from the Chicago PD evidence warehouse.

Otto Octavius had been a physics professor at UofC several years back, one weekend a number of the faculty there decided to dress as super villains and go on a crime spree.  Omega Squad had arrested them and they were all promptly found to be suffering from some kind of mental breakdown.  Octavious had taken a set of robotic arms he'd fashioned for working in his fusion experiments and tried robbing a bank.  The press had called him Doctor Octopus.  Now he was back at UofC as Dr. Octavious, and Kel as Devil Dog was going to pay him a visit.

A quick search online had given him the room number on campus, and DD had been practicing getting around places without being seen.  A quick climb up the side of the building and he was slipping through the window where Dr. Octavious' office was.  The professor was sitting at his desk, working on grading papers, unaware that Dd had come into the room and watched him from the shadows.

Kel clambered up the wall as quickly as he could, but it was still not the most pleasant experience he could remember just a few more inches, he thinks as he pulls himself up onto the window ledge.  Sliding the window up, he slips in along with the cold october wind, and settles himself neatly against the window ledge.  Then he breaks the professor's concentration with a simple flat voice, "What's up Doc?"

Octavious' attention snaps up from his papers.  "Who's there?  What are you doing over there?"

Devil Dog doesn't get up from where he stands merely nods to the doctor, "Consider me a friend Doctor.  I'm here because not too long ago a set of metal tentacles was stolen from the Chicago PD's evidence lock-up.  We both, I hope, know what I'm referring to.  Now I'm sure eventually these will be used for some wrong doing, and being a person who believes in preparedness, I'd like to know your thoughts on what someone might be able to do with such a device."  He pauses staring at the doctor and then adds, "And of course, the best way to stop it."

"Oh."  Octavious says.  "Yes, the police came by and asked about that too."  he sits down again and cleans off his glasses.  "Well, they're made of titanium, and although you can control them individually they have a sophisticated AI which allows them to act semi independently.  With proper leverage you could tear the door off a bank vault, or throw a car.  They can be used to assist in locamotion, making it possible to cover a fairly impressive distance rather quickly.  You could scale a building with them, or use them to give yourself a boost up to a second story roof."  He shakes his head and puts his glasses back on.  "with the right kind of software though, they could even be made to operate alone.  They were originally built to work in extreme environments, so they're very durable.  the body harness allows them to get instructions from the spine instead of having to go all the way to the brain, so they can react as if they were a natural extension of your body.  It takes some time to get them to work properly, so whoever took them would have had to spend a couple of weeks getting used to them."

Devil Dog nods, behind his mask he's a bit surprised at how quickly the doctor came forward with that information.  He gets up and steps into the office a bit getting a look around before he continues speaking, "You're a very forward man Doctor, I like that.  From the sounds of it, they could use this to commit a crime pretty much anywhere.  Tell me Doctor, who else besides yourself would know about them and their capabilities?"

Octavious sits quietly for a minute, thinking the question over.  "Just the police I guess.  The doctors at the hospital never really asked about them, they were more concerned with my motivations and state of mind."

Devil Dog shakes his head and says, "Then who would think to steal them doctor.  Think.  Did you ever publish any articles, did you have any students assist you in their construction, did you ever talk about them when you were at the hospital?"

"No.  I've tried to put all that behind me.  I don't even have any notes from back then, the police took everything when I was arrested.  There was some news footage, and some stories in the paper I was told after the incident.  I'm sure lots of people knew about them in general, but I can't think of anyone that would have had any details."

"Damn..." Devil Dog says under his breath, unsure of what to do next.  Then slowly an idea hits him and says, "Doctor, you said that alot of people would've known about them in general.  Do you think someone from seeing the news reports might've tried to design them or rebuild them?"  He elaborates, "I don't know if you've been following recent news events out in the suburbs but it seems that someone is taking an interest in alot of old villainous creations.  Do you think a person might've tried to rebuild them and has instead just taken the genuine article?"

"I don't know.  It's possible I guess.  I try not to think too much about the whole incident.  I'm sorry I couldn't be more help."

Devil Dog slams his fist into his own palm in rage before speaking, "Dammit Doctor."  He calms himself before returning to the window, "Thank you Doctor, at least you were able to give me solid information.  If I learn anything about the device actually being used I'll be back."  He then steps out of the windowsill, and makes way up towards the rooftop trying to figure out where to turn next in his search for these crazy tentacles.
