Title: Chapter 29-21, Colin and the Blackbird speak
Post by: secretoracle on February 05, 2007, 12:47:47 PM
Colin was looking to have a chat with the Blackbird.

OOC: I think this would be sunday morning, probably as Colin goes through his paper route.

Blackbird, I wanted to ask you something. I'm afraid it's another round of my silly questions, so I understand if you have better things to do. You are my guide, as the crow is Bobby's. Am I the only one you guide, or there are more? And another thing: am I a spirit dancer because you chose me, or you chose me among spirit dancers?

There's much less of Colin's usual urgency or awkwardness when talking with the blackbird. Today he's relaxed. He just wants to learn.

You are the one destined, chosen before your birth by cosmic forces.  You are the Spirit Dancer, I am your guide.

It takes him a moment to figure out what it means, but when he does it's a rather satisfactory answer.

... I see.

Cosmic forces. Cool.

I'd like to know more about spirit dancers.

Colin wonders how the blackbird manages to make those capital letters sound so... capital.

I'd like to know if I am the only one or if there are more. I'd like to know about the first one, and his story. And I'd like to know about the last one before me. If that is possible.

There is only ever one.  Those who have come before and those who will come after have their stories told by those who's lives they have touched.  They are not tales I can tell.

Fair enough.

Colin thinks at what tugs at his heart.

I have to take a decision about those who attacked Darla, the girl you helped me to find. I know you probably can't say anything to influence me. It has to be my decision, I guess.

But... maybe you can help me another way though. When I helped her, we saw her parents. I think I helped them help her. They were so grateful. But as I did that, I also felt... I felt how horrible it has been for her. I know her pain and her anger. I don't have to feel them, but I can make someone else feel them. I could turn them against those that wrong her.

I want to do the right thing. It feels so strange. So far, I used my magic only to help. This... wouldn't be helping. At best, it would be justice. I don't want to be like those who are gifted with a power, and then use it for all the wrong reasons. Is there an ethical code for Spirit Dancers, or only what I make of it? You once told me that I help spirits in many ways, helping others, helping strangers, and fighting the dark forces in the world. Would this be fighting the dark forces... or give in to them?

You were given a gift by the spirits, the gift to give this pain to those responsible.  This is not a power you possess, it's a test to see what you will do with this power.  Not all spirits are benevolent, and even those that are not may not be evil.  You said that at best it would be Justice.  In all things there is balance.  One man wronged becomes a monster, another becomes a saint.  You must do what you feel should be done.  There is no ethical code for Spirit Dancers, for they are not bound by ethics.

The spirit dancer thinks about it for a while as he delivers five more newspapers.

I must do what I feel should be done. Then it's not really a test for them, is it? They know me, you know me, both of you already know what I will do. It's a test for me. Because I don't really know who I am. And it's what I decide that will tell me that, isn't it?

That's what tests are for, to see if you know the answer to something.

That is quite correct. Colin has to admit.

It's just not a subject I studied very well. I hope I'll do well, though. I'd hate to disappoint you. Or I'd hate to disappoint myself. Same thing. I'd hate to find out I'm not the man I'd like to be.

The man you are now is not the man you'll be a year from now, or ten years from now.  The quest is to not be disappointed in yourself very often, but know that there will be times when you will be.

I guess I'll try to reduce them to a minimum, then. I'll just do my best. It feels a bit like I'm a cub scout again. he grins.

Just another little question. You said there is only one Spirit Dancer at any time. Then, do we always come from North America, are we always Indian or part Indian, or someone could be chosen anywhere in the world?
And even if I'm unique, Is there someone, say, in Africa but has a role similar to mine?

There is only one world, and only one people.  There are among the people of the world those which are gifted with a dual nature, they are both mortal and immortal, you are one of these people.

You have given thought to mask your identity, to protect those around you.  Do not trouble yourself.  It is the nature of the Spirit Dancers to be forgotten, to fade from the collective memory of people as easily as the sun vanishes behind a mountain.  You are both seen and unseen, and as your power grows your visage will become both comforting and terrifying.  You are to each person what they need and will eventually appear to them as they need to see you.

Oh.

Colin is speechless for a few moments.

Wow. That is going to be handy. Though I guess Sarah will be somewhat disappointed. So, I don't have to worry about that? Those looking for me won't be able to find the people I love?

No one seeks you out, but many people will find you.  Those are the people you should be concerned about.

Errr... you got me confused now. You're saying that there are people that will find me no matter what, and a mask won't make a difference?

Many will find you.  It is your fate, and theirs.

Blackbird, will my mom be in danger because of this? Will Chris or Mama Walters or Sarah, or anyone else I would never want hurt? Will I be able to protect them?

I don't care if they come for me. I'll try to be prepared. But they can't be allowed near my family.

It would be a lie to say that they will never be in danger.  You are the focal point of many things, and many forces will move through your life.  You must be strong Spirit Dancer, only through strength and conviction will you prevail against your inner demons.

Colin is about to say something but the last part catches him by surprise.

"Inner demons?" he says out loud.

Humans all have inner demons.  Some more powerful then others.  Some are given strength by life's experiences, and some are overcome.

Strength and conviction...

Colin considers it a bit, then sighs.

It doesn't sound easy at all. But I guess that if it was easy, everyone could do it, and there wouldn't be a need for a Spirit Dancer. I hope you chose me well. I'm gonna need some time to digest what you told me today, but thank you for answering.
