Kel makes a trip into the city, to the Wayne Foundation house where Jack is living.

Kel arrives into the fancy home and looks around at everything, when Jack comes down he looks at him and says, "Hey Jack, I've been meaning some questions, about well my powers."

"Ok, shoot."

Kel nods and starts speaking, "Well, I've been doing what you said, watching like Kung Fu movies, shows that are about fighting, boxing matches, and all that stuff.  But it's just ya know, is there anything more to all this, I mean it's great to kick ass and stuff but I mean.  Well did you ever feel, when you were around other sueprheroes, like...erm..."  He lets the emptiness hang around and then he says, "That you were kind of limited?"

Jack laughs, "Kind of?  Kel every time I'm around someone with one of those cool powers like flight, or the ability to peel lemons with their mind I think 'Man, I got boned'.  Everyone wishes they had the other guys powers once in a while.  It's not always just about kicking ass either.  you have to get the other skills you want to become the type of hero you want to be, or villain."

Kel raises an eyebrow when Jack mentions villain but shrugs it off, "I guess you're right, but where does a 14 year old kid learn to become a detective or break into places ya know?  Everyone else has all this flashy stuff, they might as well frikkin' light up or something.  I guess it kinda hurts a guy's sense of self when he has to go to other people just to save someone..."  Kel heaves a sigh and sits down into a chair.

"You get those skills the same place everyone does.  You read, watch TV, and study hard.  No matter how bad ass we are, it all boild down to how well we use our heads.  You have relatives in the police, talk to them.  I'm sure they'd see it as a good thing if you showed an interest in what they did.  There isn't anything wrong with needing other people either.  I've always needed help of one kind or another.  I have this saying, 'Use your friends wisely'.  You can't be expected to do everyting yourself, think of how much of an ass you'd be if you were that perfect."

Kel laughs at Jack's statement, "Good point."  Then all of a sudden something, he'd never actually told Jack about his relatives, he might've mentioned his grandfather in passing but not the rest, "How'd you know about my uncles?"

"I didn't come all this way to teach self-defense to a bunch of strangers without finding out about them first.  I was born at night, but it damn sure wasn't last night.  Reams of stuff about you guys, really fascinating stuff too.  I didn't read most of it, but I'm sure it's exciting."

Kel gives a small chuckle and nods, "So just keep studying.  That's the advice that my math teacher gives me Jack.  Alright, beyond stuff like that, I mean is there anyway I can just become a better fighter, I mean, should I stick to unarmed or should I start learning about guns and swords and everything.  I mean, really, if everything else I do is gonna be just like anything else I learn, I figure I should at least get better at what I am good at right?"

"You just need to go with what feels right.  I've known guys that wont touch a gun, and guys that wont leave bed without one, and even sleep with one.  It's all what feels right.  I've got a lot of years behind me, so I have a lot of stuff I picked up.  You'll find your place."

Kel nods slowly, trying to soak up what Jack has said, and then says, "Jack, I don't really want to pry, but just so I can get an idea of where my life is heading...what have you done with all these years?"

Jack sighs and sits down.  "I fought in two wars, got accused of being a traitor, defied law, played at being a spy, saved a lot nof people and loved one woman.  Moslty, I crawled around underneath the clean and tidy world most people know and fought for the things I beleived in.  I didn't always win, but I didn't always loose either."

"Wow..." Kel says, his head kinda drooping down a little bit.  Jack was one of those guys who'd be a legend if anyone ever knew about him, but it all sounded kind of sad, "That's...wow.  I mean, just yea, it must've been amazing but it sounds so depressing."

"Luckily it's only depressing when I look back at it through a bottle of scotch.  The rest of the time I can usually only recall the high points."

Kel smiles, trying to take the edge out of the whole can of worms he opened up, "Well that's good at least."  He then looks abck over at Jack, "Hey if you did all that sutff, I mean, well...could you teach me a little bit more than self-defense.  I'm not really sure how much my uncles would really tell me about police work, especially without telling my dad and getting suspicious."  He watches Jack to see his reaction.

"Sure, I can do that.  I'll show you some stuff, introduce you to some people.  The only condition is that you maintain a passing GPA in all your classes."

Kel smirked and then said, "I know this might be a bit hard to believe," He gestures down to his clothing, the hair, the muscles that really shouldn't be on a 14 year old and says, "But I'm not that dumb of a guy, I think I can get by, probably just have to study a bit more,"  He says the word more like he's trying to cover up the fact that he rarely opens up books, "But hey I can read doing push ups, makes things awkward but easier."  He then shrugs and says, "Besides, it sounds like I'm going to have to be doing a lot of studying anyway if I want to get to where I want to be."  He sighs as he thinks about all of it, and then all of a sudden he says, "Did you ever know my grandfather?"

"Hey, I learned a long time ago that looks don't matter.  All that I was saying was, if I'm gonna teach you to be a criminal, you'd better be a well educated one."  Jack smiles.


"I don't think so.  I was involved in some island fighting, but not a lot of it.  I met some of the guys in the Dog group, I don't think I met your grandfather though."

Kel's eyebrow arches up, "Dog group?"  Kel thinks he means the marines but something about the name just doesn't sit right.

"Dog was 'D' in the old phonetic alphabet.  The Super Soldier Project was Project Able Able.  There were three of us, Able Able Able was Jack Masterson, I was Able Able Baker and Steve Rogers was Able Able Charlie.  When the guy that invented the formula got killed, they tried to recreate it from notes and stuff.  That was Dog Group.  They were mostly Marines in the Pacific, and they took the serum that eventually was perfected to make them bad ass, if only temporarily."

Kel nods, saying oh, and then looks up, "I've met you, and everyone's heard of Steve Rogers...but who's Jack Masterson?"

Jack sighs again, "Well, he was the Super Soldier assigned to Europe.  He led the Allied Avengers.  After the war he worked for the government, and then back in the late 80s he went rouge.  He's been running a group of paranormal mercenaries ever since.  They called him the Patriot during the war and he was called the Super Patriot after that.  When they formed the first Eagle Force they gave the name and costume to another guy."

Kel nodded, "Did you ever have a codename or costume or anything?"  Kel thinks to himself, while Deivl Dog was a good name and his costume idea was pretty straight forward, there was something to the idea of taking up someone's mantle that appealed to him.  He looks over at Jack, trying to avoid looking too hopeful.

"Sort of."  Jack says, "I did the costume thing and carried a shield that was pretty cool.  I drag the shield out of mothballs every now and then, but I haven't done the costume thing in a long time.  For a while my codename in the government was Shield, and it sort of circulated in hero circles."

Kel tries to hide his glee and then says, "Could I see it...just...ya know..."  He tries it hard to form the sentence in his head, "I like stuff like that ya know.  Older stuff, I mean, I raided through my grandfather's old chest to get something like a costume for when I do go out but I've never ya know, seen a real one...well 'cept for Velocity's.  I guess that'd be a real one."  He thinks about it for a moment and smiles, lost for a little bit in the thought.

"Sure, I guess."  Jack takes Kel upstairs to one of the room where he has his stuff.  He lays a case on a table and opens it.

"Wow,"  Kel said as he looked it over, slowly lifting it up and turning it in his hands, letting his fingers run down the suit getting a feel for the texture, "This is amazing, just it's so perfect looking.  Tight so that it doesn't catch on stuff, and kinda intimidating, and dark enough it probably blends in well.  Why would you stop wearing it?"  He looks up at Jack when he asks.

OOC: The shield is there.  

There is a brace on the right arm and a rack on the back of the suit where the shield attatches.  Jack shows Kel that a spring arm snaps the shield away from the back and electro magnets attract it to the arm brace.  The spring arm can also reverse the process, putting the shield back on the harness on the wearers back.

The shield itself is black.  But Jack puts on the right glove and touches his fingers to his thumb in a strange counting like action, and the shield changes colors.  A white star in the middle and alternating red, whit, and blue stripes.  "I call this it's parade setting."  He performs another finger/thumb counting move and the shield becomes black again.  Another maneuver and a series of blades emerge around the edge, giving it a uniform cutting surface.  A second later he retracts them.  "It has a gravity impellor in it and counter weighted balances, so it can fly a long way, and I can launch it right off the arm brace.  It can also act like a parachut with the gravity impellor on full.  It's not as indestructable as Cap's but it's also a lot more high tech."

"I guess I stopped wearing it because I just didn't need to be that guy anymore.  I do a lot of undercover stuff now, infiltration, recon.  Just wouldn't be good for me to be caught with this in my luggage."

Kel nods, he understands what Jack means, and then he kind of fidgets as he tries to phrase the question, "And what if...someone else...ya know...wanted to be...that person."

"Ah."  Jack looks down at the costume for a minute.  "I'm not sure I'm ready for that.  It's who I was for a long time."

Kel nods, patting the costume gently, "I understand Jack.  It is an impressive costume though, just wow, and the shield too is just amazing."  He then tries to shift the subject saying, "Thanks Jack, I can't wait to start learning the other stuff though, it seems like it'll be slightly more fun than just fighting."

"You think you'd be interested in following in someone else's name, some established hero maybe?"

"Well,"  Kel said sitting down along the trunk he says, "It's weird, I mean, when I was a kid I always thought I wanted to be like my dad or something.  But well, he's a prick pretty much, and I never wanted to be some straight laced guy like that, ya know?  So, I've been trying to well figure out what I could do with my life.  And then all of this came along, and it's just, I guess I kind of want to do this, it's exciting and cool, and you don't have to worry about following the rules so much.  You get to bend them, even break them and that's just so cool."  He then shrugs, "But I just don't feel right doing it all on my own, ya know?  I mean, I'm not some guy who got lucky and fell into something, I got these powers from my grandfather.  Plus, on my own I'm not someone who's going to be eaten up by the cameras..."  He doesn't say it, but he means Velocity, or any of his friends with their flashy powers, "But ya know, something would just seem right if I was carrying on something.  I mean, I'm carrying on my grandfather's powers, why not someone's name?  Something that gives me some credibility but at the same time gives me that flexibility."

"I see what you're saying."  Jack says, taking a seat.  "I know a guy, who might be interested in finding someone to take over for him in a few years.  He took over for someone, and now he's thinking about the future and finding someone to take over for him.  I could arrange a meeting.  Something like this is a serious commitment though, it can usually turn into a life's work.  You think you want to do this for the next twenty years?"

Kel thinks and then starts to nod, "Yea, I think I would actually.  One of the few things I think I could be sure of.  I definitely think I'd like to do this for a long time.  It's weird, and it's crazy, and it hurts like hell sometimes but it's fun, and people always say you should love your job right?"  Then he thinks about the idea of taking on the mantle and he says, "I'd love to meet him."

"I'll make the call then."  Jack says, headed back downstairs, "I was gonna watch a movie, you're welcome to sit in."

Kel smiles and says, "What movie?"

"Thelma and Louise."

OOC: This is a good place to close this thread, since Kel will have moved onto his workout with Seth.
