Title: Chapter 38-3, Audition
Post by: Kat on August 29, 2007, 02:42:04 PM
One fine day in late November, just before Thanksgiving break, Sammy invites Elrod, Dave, and Greg to meet her in a rehearsal room to let them hear something related to Elrod's band.  She plays her alternate instrument, a trumpet, for them.  She's pretty confident about that.  Then she says, "I've been trying to sing too."  She's not as confident here, but she gives it her best shot singing some songs a capella.  "Well?" she says, trying to look like its not so important to her.  "Do I pass?"

Elrod and Greg clap immediately, Dave takes his phone out and sends a text message.  "How do you sound in front of a band?"  he says, then claps after he's sent his message.

Sammy quits pretending she doesn't care.  She jumps up and down, clapping her hands and squealing in delight, then hurls her arms around El's neck.  "Really?  You're not just saying it to be nice?  I don't know how I sound in front of a band, I haven't tried, I wasn't sure I'd be good enough unless I practiced for a while first,..."  Her words spill out incredibly fast.

"You were really good."  Elrod says, "But Dave has a point, you need to see if your voice will carry well with a band."

"Not a problem."  Dave says, "We'll know in a minute."  It's scary somtimes the number of people Dave knows, and how fast they can be mobilized.  About a minute later three guys come in.  Two have guitars and amps and one has a portable electric keyboard.  "Just set up guys, we''ll be with you in a minute."

Dave has to be paranormal.  That's the only rational explanation.  "Dave, you and your ability to summon minions really scare me sometimes."

Within a couple of minutes the band is set up and they chat with Sammy to find a song she's comfortable belting out to music.

OOC: Make a D20 roll for me.

Sammy and the band do a popular song, it's one of the few she felt she knew the words to and could remember them under the stress of the band.  She did a good job, and the music helped her to focus on her singing and not think about the audience.  When they finish Elrod, Dave and Greg all stand to applaude.

"That was awesome."  Elrod says giving Sammy a kiss.

"Bravo."  Greg says, "You should try out for the school musical this year, attractive girls that can sing are hard to come by."

"Nicely done, very nicely done."  Dave says.  "Thanks for the help guys."  he says to the band as they pack up to go.

The musicians give Sammy some pats on the back as they pass her and head out.

"Okay, so singing is covered."  Elrod says.  "Who are we going to try to rope into Chaparoning.  Jerry found out he can't, he's actually getting a promotion and going to work for one of dad's companies in New Mexico.  Who was this other guy Colin suggested, Jack?"

I did it!  Sammy beams with pride at her performance.  "Jack is the guy who has been giving us self-defense lessons.  Let me know when you want to ask about the chaperone gig, and I'll take you to meet him."  She flashes a confident smile at the boys.  "We're going to make this happen, one way or another.  Maybe the school musical is a good idea; they'll be able to see and hear for themselves that I'm for real with this stuff, or at least real enough for high school standards."
