Monday when the pep squad gets together, Megan is introduced to Torrance Shipman.  She's a new transfer to Oak Park.

"Girls, let's give a big warm welcome to Torrance.  The new team Captain."  The coach announces and then claps.  The other girls join her in welcomiong Torrance.

"Thanks, really.  I know I'm new, but I promise you that we'll be doing great things this year, building on the things you already know and making the team even better."

Megan went over to greet Torrance with a smile, congratulating her.  The blonde teen had not really expected to keep the position, but really had expected Diana to take it back over.

After the introductions Torrance comes over to talk to Megan.  "I noticed you worked out most of the coregraphy the squad uses, that's really great.  You've done a really good job of keeping everything together and running, especially with everything that's happened here.  I've heard this year has been a total hell."

“Thanks.”  Megan replied with a smile.  “Its been a lot of work, but fun as well.”  When Torrance mentioned how the year had been going, the blonde teen nodded in agreement.  “Yeah, it has really been rough.”  She then smiled again.  “But hopefully all that is behind us now.”

"I'm sure it is."  Torrance said, "So, someone said your dad is like the mayor or something.  I guess that can be a pain, sort of on a short leash I take it?"

“Yeah, he is the mayor.  But it’s not really that bad though.”  Megan replied.  “Just like when he was a partner at his old law firm in the city, he is pretty much never around.”

"Yeah, my dad is like that.  He works for some big recruiting company, so he travels all the time.  We came here so mom could take a job at the airport.  She does purchasing for the consession companies.  So, I was thinking of inviting the girls out this weekend, to get better aquainted.  Any idea where we could go?"

“Well, there are tons of places to go, depends on what you want to do.”  Megan replied.  “There is always shopping, Michigan Avenue is awesome for that.  There are also plenty of places to eat there.  Or where you wanting something a bit less crowded?”

"Actually, I was thinking more crowded.  Amusement parks, anything like that?"

“Navy Peir.”  Megan replied.  “Its on the lake downtown.”

"That sounds perfect.  We'll get the details worked out later in the week."  Torrance starts to take charge of the squad, going over the routines and checking the roster.  The practice goes well, Torrance really seems to put her whole heart into being a cheerleader.

After practice John comes to meet Megan so they can walk home.  "I heard the new girl is gonna head the squad?"  John asks, "I thought your were gonna end up with that slot?"

After giving John a quick kiss on the cheek, Megan started walking alongside as she nodded to his question about Torrance taking over the squad.  “Yeah, I thought I would as well, but she is older and more experienced.  She knows what she is doing and is really into being a cheerleader.  I just wish the coach had given me a bit of warning.”

"Yeah, seems a little sudden."  John says.  "You seem okay with it though.  Maybe next yer, she'll graduate and you can become Captain.  You should maybe talk to her about being the co-Captain or something."

“The coach didn’t even thank me for having stepped in, I think if she had wanted co-Captains, she would have made us that.”  Megan commented with a frown.  “Seems like I will be waiting till some other year for a lot of things.”

John puts his arm across her shoulder and gives her a squeeze, "Can't help but think I'm partly to blame there."  He says.

“You?”  Megan gave John a look of surprise as she put her arm closet to him around his back.  “Oh…that.”  She quickly added as she realized what he was referring to.

“No, not really, we are after all only fourteen.  I mean, I might think I’m ready, but I’m probably not.  Guess that is what comes from spending time around older girls all the time that are at that stage, though I think some of them probably should have waited longer themselves.  Not to mention reading magazines that are aimed at twenty something young women.”  Megan said.  “Besides, you don’t know how nice it is not to have that pressure from you as well as other places.  Most other guys would have been pushing hard for that by now.”

"Well, still, it's got to be there in your head with everything else.  You have plenty of time to enjoy high school.  You still have the con debate team, and your still on the squad so it's not like you'll have any shortage of things to do."

“No, no shortage at all.”  Megan agreed.  “With this change, I will probably be spending more time with the squad at lunch and stuff for awhile, though tomorrow is our time to hang out with them and the football players anyway.”

"Yeah, about that."  John says slowly.  "I was going to try to spend some time with the Science Club guys.  And, don't take this the wrong way, but it would be better if you weren't there when I did."

“Yeah, you have already said that.”  Megan said, mentioning back during Homecoming week.  “Isolating them isn’t going to help them any.  Sides, I get along just fine with Brian.  But, that’s okay.  You can hangout with them Wednesday or the rest of the week and I’ll just be with the squad anyways.”

"It's not isolating them, or who you get a long with.  It's that they don't loosen up when you're around.  Half of them are staring at your chest and most of the rest are trying not to drool, usually unsuccessfully.  I need them to be relaxed, so I can hopfully figure out who is up to what."

“Oh, expecting some of our trouble makers to be among them?”  Megan asked with a grin.  “No big deal, like I just said, I am going to probably be busy with the squad a lot anyway, so that should give you good amout of time on your own to hang with them.”

"Yeah.  Some of the robot stuff, maybe the love goo.  Even if they're not part of it, they may know who is without realizing it.  I figure we do some geek stuff, they get relaxed, and we see what shakes loose.  Besides, Torrance could use a native guide to the wilds of Oak Park High.  You seem ideally suited to that task."

“Well, so far she seems to have done just fine without one.”  Megan commented. 

"Yeah, which is weird."  John says, "How the heck did she get so popular so fast?"

“Well, it wasn’t really popularity, just somehow wooing the coach.”  Megan replied.  She went quite a moment before she added, “Though, it does remind me of something really odd my sister told me while we were down in Mexico.  I had mentioned that Lisa had been the captain before being pulled out of school, and she barely remembered her, saying she had not been all that popular last year.” 

"Well, maybe being a Senior has some profound effect on some girls."

“Maybe.”  Megan replied, sounding unconvinced.

She then decided to change subjects.  “So…at lunch today were you really fantasizing about me in a elf costume?  Or was it one of those short red with white trim Mrs. Clause outfits?”  She asked with a playful smile.
