Title: Chapter 44-5, Agent of Fate.
Post by: secretoracle on January 24, 2008, 02:50:24 PM
Colin and Sarah were walking to school.  Sarah thought about how she might be spending too much time with Colin.  As they were walking towards a busy street, Colin's tattoo began to itch.  He wasn't really aware of it until he felt himself scratching at it, and the tingle from it made him realize it was trying to tell him something.  The Blackbird settled down on a newspaper box nearby.

There are wheels in motion, and you are faced with a hard choice.  Three of your friends are in danger, and you only have the resources to save two.  High Lightning has the power to intervene for one, and the Paragon possesses the speed to save another.

Colin sees a flash of Sammy about to be hit by a car, then Sylvia in the same situation, and finally Donnie.

There is no wrong answer, only different paths.  Now you must choose.

Sarah keeps walking along staring down at her feet.  Why are we walking again?  I could totally zap us there in like five seconds?  Oh right.  I checked the scale this morning like an idiot and noticed I'd gained like three pounds.  Shallow Am I.  So I haven't been doing enough lately.  That's fine.  Maybe I could ease off on the snacks a little.  I mean if Donnie can summon up the will power to eat salads now and then so can I right?

"W-Why?"

Colin is paralyzed in utter terror for a moment, then he realizes he can't afford the time. He looks into his heart hoping that it will lead him to the right choice, trying to ignore the tears that start falling from his eyes. How can there be a right choice? How can he be asked to chose who gets to live among his friends?

They don't deserve this. It should have been me.

That makes his decision. A vague hope, a desperate idea. Otherwise he's never going to forgive himself.

He grabs Sarah's shoulder and with a broken voice he tells her "Go to the back of the school! Donnie's about to get hit by a green van. Don't ask, just go! You'll make it!"

He takes out his phone, and dials John's number as fast as he can. "John, you've got to run! Sylvia is about to get run over by a car! Linden Avenue, just before the corner with Superior! Go!!!" he shouts into the phone.

He runs back to his bike, unchains it and leaves the chain there, starting to speed towards Sammy.
Please fly away. Please see it in time. Please don't die. Please let me save you too. I'm getting there. I'll take your wounds on me. Please don't die.

Colin starts whispering in the mother of languages, asking the spirits for help. He doesn't know yet how he's going to use it, but he knows he's going to need it. One way or another.

Sarah starts from her idle thoughts and stares at Colin for a heartbeat.  Even as she starts to ask, "Wha ?" her brain catches up to his words and she is gone in a blink.  *karun*

She ports in high enough to see the nearby streets and hopefully spot Donnie or a green Van.

EDIT:  Just read Donnie's scene after I posted this.  *silly me*  I'll just *zwip*  over there shall I?
