Title: Chapter 44-3, Donnie's morning
Post by: secretoracle on January 24, 2008, 09:44:26 AM
Dad was totally shocked to hear that Donnie was a suspect in the Elrod Janush attack.  He spent almost an hour fuming about how ridiculous the accusation was.  Donnie's mother sat there with Donnie, quietly urging him not to say anything to stop dad's rant.  All the while she sat there with a knowing smile turning up the corners of her mouth.  Donnie also noticed that she didn't seem to be drinking as much over the last few days.  She still seemed to hit the bottle, but only for a glass or two to shore up her nerves.

The next morning Donnie makes his way to school, like every other day.  He might normally walk with Sylvia, but was running late today and had sent her a text to tell her he'd meet her at school.  He was crossing the street on the back side of the school when something drew his eye.  It was just a stray feeling, like something entering the bubble of his personal world and sending ripples along it on one side.  He turned his head, and that's when he saw it.  The green van was speeding right for him, and the driver had Donnie fixed in his gaze.

OOC: Donnie has a Move Action because he made his Save.  He can opt to Make a Reflex Save at DC 18.  If he makes the save he will instead have a Standard Action.  If he fails he'll loose his Move Action AND not be able to get out of the way of the car in time.

Reflex Save (1d20+1=13) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1471410/)

Oh god, I wish I had wings! was Donnie's fleeting thought before the van struck him.

OOC: Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear.  With your Move Action you could dive for cover.  That would get you out of the way of the van.  If you opt for the Reflex save it's to possibly give yourself a Standard Action instead (which would/should be enough time to do something else....cooler)  So, let me know which you wanted to do.

ooc: I opted for the attempted reflex save, therefore allowing myself the option of doing something cooler. I failed tho, and therefore lost my Move action as well, right?

OOC: Just wanted to make sure we were on the same sheet of the obituary  ;D

Donnie's mind went into overdrive for a second, there were so many things that could be the reason why this was happening, and he suddenly found his position strangely comforting.  This could be the way out of this mess.  Maybe, the thought, if the van hits me hard enough it will knock me back into the Dragon Reach.  That would be.....HEY!  His focus had slipped, and now the van was there.

OOC: Toughness Save DC 24 and a Fate Roll.

Toughness Save (1d20+3=5) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1471443/)

ooc: Aaaand this is where I use my hero point..

Toughness Save (1d20+3=4) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1471447/)

So, with a minimum of '10' on my roll, that gives me a 13 on the toughness save. See, I told you I was screwed.. :'(

Fate Roll (1d20=11) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1471450/)

Donnie feels the van strike him and his mind goes numb as he ragdolls away from the green van. Part of his mind is detached, thinking I really should get the license plate to this van, but the main part of his mind is yammering in fear and crying for his mother..

What came from his lips was an explosive grunt of pain as the world pinwheeled around him.

*zwip* And the sound was almost unheard.  Donnie felt himself spinning about, and suddenly in his head the math was all wrong.  The spin was the wrong direction and the velocity was *zwip* and he was standing on the sidewalk watching a van plow headlong through the intersection, swerve, jump a curb, and crash into a building.

Donnie's heart skips a beat, and he realizes that Sarah has her arms around him.  He's whole and unbroken.

"Sah-Sarah? Ohmygod. Oh shit." He hugs her desperately. "I thought I was dead!"

Sarah gives Donnie a hug and tracks the vans progress.  "You okay?  All the pieces still intact?"  When she lets go of Donnie she stumbles a few steps around on the sidewalk before sitting down.  "Woohoo head rush.  Good sidewalk.  Nice sidewalk.  Stay."

OOC:
Teleported w/ Turnabout = Extra effort for Sarah.

OOC: AND! some fancy acrobatics in the middle there.  To an outside observer the van was just about to hit Donnie.  Sarah appeared, grabbed him, did a kick off from the hood of the van, throwing her and Donnie into a spin, then *zwip* the two were at the curb.

Sarah watches as the van shot through the intersection, then slid into a spin, hopped sideways over the curb and landed on it's side skidding a few feet to stop with a crunch against a tree.

Donnie crumples to the curb next to Sarah, arms hugging his knees. He's shaking, this crazy accident right after everything with Torrance and- wait. No, no accident.  "That guy was seriously trying to kill me, Sarah. He was staring right at me the whole time. I have never seen him before, and he was totally intent on running me down."

"What the hell, seriously. What the effing hell?"

His eyes do not leave the van, it's wheels still spinning as the van rocks on it's side.

Donnie gets his cell phone out and shakily dials 911.

Sarah's phone rings. It's Colin.

"Donnie's House of Pancakes how can I help you?" answers Sarah still somewhat dazed.

"I take it you're both all right. Sylvia and Sammy are too. Well, Sammy is. Sylvia... I hope she will be. Physically she's ok."

Sarah says, "We are okay other than nearly having a make out session with a grill.  Donnie says hi.  Well he would if he wasn't on the phone with the police.  Wait.  What do you mean so are Sammy and Sylvia?  Did someone put a hit out on all three of them?  What happened?  Are you okay?"

If Sarah has recovered from the experience she gets up and heads over to check on the van and it's occupant.  She's ready to stick a lightsaber in some nutjobs brains.

Donnie hangs up with the dispatcher. "Sylvia and Sammy were attacked too? Is Sylvia alright?"

He speed dials Sylvia's number.

"Yes, all three of them at once. I sent John after Sylvia and went myself after Sammy. We're all fine, but it was a really close call. And not someone. I think it was her. Torrance. I dunno how, though. Sylvia says she doesn't have her powers anymore, but has gone looking for vengeance anyway. Don't tell Donnie. She... needs to do it. I hope she'll learn."

Sarah says, "He's already trying to get a hold of her.  Where is Torrance now anyway?"

"I don't think she'll answer her phone, but tell him she's all right, she just doesn't want to be found. I think Torrance is in a hospital, but I'm not sure where. She might be at home too.I don't know where Sylvia is going. I couldn't stop her. Maybe we should just let her go."

Sarah says, "I thought your friend just told us to make sure everyone stays quiet?  Sylvia blazing into the hospital to kick ass isn't very quiet."

"It's Sylvia we're talking about. She probably can be quiet. Anyway, I wouldn't know how to stop her."

Donnie flips closed his phone and returns to Sarah. "She's not answering. God I hope she doesn't do anything stupid."

He cocks his head as he hears the distant sound of approaching sirens. "Sarah, you'd better jet so you won't be involved in this." He kisses her on the cheek. "Thanks for saving my life."

Sarah smiles and says, "Aw shucks, what are friends for?  If I can't pull you from the hungry grill of death what good am I?"
She looks a little shyly at Donnie before saying, "I am really glad your okay.  I know we mostly just tease each other but you are a good friend Donald Douglas."  She smiles again.  "No more playing in traffic for you."

Finally she turns serious about their situation and says, "Colin and I talked with a police friend of his.  He's looking into the Torrence situation and he strongly advised that you, Sammy and Sylvia keep things quiet.  This attack is in a backass way a good thing for you.  The driver of that van is someone important to us.  He's either working of his free will for someone we've pissed off or he has been mojo'd to run you down.  If you were road paste there would be no proof against Torrence.  There would also be no Donnie to hold back the tides of evil in Oak Park.  We've got to get the Super Cops, the paranormal police in on this.  Right now they are looking at Sammy as some manipulating b*tch and using you as a tool for her petty whims.  I think you have an important job right now.  You've got to keep a level head with the cops and try and talk some sense into Sylvia.  Colin has given up on her.  She's off on her own and if the paranormal cops get involved they might find her mental fingerprints in peoples heads and she might get nailed for all of Torrence's work, especially if Beetlejuice has already put the kibosh on Torrence."

That thought worries her the most and she grabs Donnie's shoulder, "This could get really bad Donnie.  Not just for Sylvia but for all of us because she keeps forgetting she's running around with a nuclear bomb strapped to her.  She's attached herself to Beetlejuice and he doesn't like getting noticed.  If  a mentalist working for the cops starts digging into her they might find a connection to him and then he might just decide to wipe the whole place clean and start fresh somewhere else.  We could all wake up in our beds not remembering any of this school year.  Or just not wake up at all.  If you find her, talk some sense into her Donnie.  And be cool Donnie."

Sarah gives him a nod of encouragement and jogs around a house to pop off the scene.

Donnie shakes his head in wonder. "Sarah, some days you totally amaze me. You act like a goof and make people forget there's a very smart brain in that head. I'll call Sylvia again. AND stay out of traffic."

Donnie dials Sylvia again leaving the following message: Sylvia, this is Donnie. Please please do not do anything to Torrance. Colin has the paranormal investigators for the cops on this, and they will probably be able to find Torrance's mental fingerprints on those she's screwed with. Don't do anything that would compromise their case against her, please?

Chewing on a fingernail, he summons Pip and tells him to go looking for Sylvia, to stay with her and protect her.

Then he waits until the police get there.

Donnie is joined on the scene by some of the neighbors in the area.  It's not long before the police and ambulance arrive.  Other witnesses confirm that the car tried to run Donnie over.

OOC: I assume you tell the police you jumped clear, since all the witnesses were on the far side oblique to the car they couldn't have seen Sarah do her teleport thing.

A few minutes after the authorities arrive your mother arrives.  She's obviously shaken and holds onto him for a few minutes when she realizes he's okay.  "You're gonna give me a heart attack, aren't you?"  She's smiling when she says it, but Donnie can tell she's having a hard time dealing with all this.

Donnie explains that he jumped away from the speeding van, since it had to jump the curb to get him.

When Donnie's mother arrives, he hugs her fiercely and is not afraid to let a few tears slip out. "I thought I was a goner, Mom. I really did. I must be some kind of bad-luck magnet."

"Don't say that.  You're not bad luck.  How many moms get to have a son that's a hero.  You're not bad luck."  She seems reluctant to let go of him, but they want to run him to the ER to check him out just in case.  "I'll follow you, I'll be right behind you the whole way."

Donnie smiles wearily. "A hero huh? I don't suppose they give heroes extra credit towards chemistry? I could use it."

He gets into the ambulance and complies with the orders of the EMTs.
