Title: Chapter 59-1-3, I Never Said Goodbye
Post by: opensesame on June 16, 2009, 11:04:59 PM
Sarah takes Colin's hand as the US meeting breaks up at the end of the period.
"Got a minute?"

"Sure." he says with a smile, squeezing her hand gently back.

She gives him the soft smile that is usually reserved for him alone.  "Thanks.  I just wanted to say," Sarah starts and pauses.

She thinks about it for a moment before shrugging.  "I just want to say I'm sorry.  Sorry for everything.  I was a bitch and I still am but I know I am so I hope I can get better.  I'm sorry I bailed right before the dance.  I'm sorry I left you without any clue what was going on and I'm sorry I didn't talk to you while I was away.  I ran away from you, and everyone and everything just to be selfish little me for a few days.  I hate the winter.  I hate Chicago in the winter.  If there is a gloomier, nastier place on Earth than Chicago in winter I do not want to know about it."

She looks around the news room a bit unsure of herself but decides to just let the words keep rolling.
"Ever since that quick trip Donnie and I made down South I've been dreaming of the sun and the heat.  I just woke up one morning and I couldn't deal with it anymore.  Mom and Dad know I can get down in the winter.  They've known since I was a little kid.  They found me in the kitchen one late winter afternoon in the kitchen at our old place in the city.  I had every light in the place on and the oven turned on and the door open.  Fortunately it was an electric stove.  I was just sitting coloring with crayons nearby and soaking up the heat.  I remember the crayons were a little smudgy like thick paint after a while.

So I packed up a bag and went down stairs a few days back and told Mom I had to get out.  She called the doc and he actually wrote me up a note to be absent from school for "Solar Therapy".  My dad is down in Florida working and I got a flight out.

So I'm sorry.  I don't know why I get this way or why I feel so horrible when it happens.  I hope my teleporting range really improves soon and I can just hop to some sunshine whenever I want.  That would be perfect.  Then maybe I wouldn't have any more freak outs and leave my friends behind.  I think I'm back to my usual charming self now.  And I'm really, really sorry."

Colin listens carefully and nods. For a moment he seems to be far away, then he looks back at her and smiles.

"It makes sense for you to need sunshine."

He takes her in his arms, as always, like she was all the precious things in the world.

"I'm glad you feel better now. And don't worry, soon you'll be able to go really far. You won't suffer for shortage of sunlight for long." he says, a bit enigmatically. Sometimes he has to chase his thoughts around, in strange places, and the words don't follow very well.

"In the meanwhile though, when you're feeling down, please tell me. I'd like to try something that could help you."

He kisses her on the forehead, lightly, keeping her tight.

"I'm sorry I didn't understand. You deserved better."

"Oh really?" asks Sarah with a wry grin on her face.  "Just what did you want to try?"

She knew most of her hints of innuendo flew past Colin without ever registering but she was curious what he was hinting at all the same.

"It's a sort of magic I haven't tried yet." he says, not registering anything as expected. "Have you ever heard about Mendhi? Henna tattoos?"

"Oh yeah, sure," she says nodding.  "I think they're pretty cool looking.  They can take a really long time to put on for just a temporary tattoo though.  What about them?"

"I think I could make magic ones. I could try to make you one to keep the warmth of the sun close to you."

"Really?  That would be pretty cool... er great.  Thank you!  How do you do it?"

"Well, I would paint it on you. Which means we'd need some quiet place where no one who could equivocate what's happening could catch us in the act." he says, suddenly a little awkward.

Equivocate? thinks Sarah.  Oh.. he doesn't want anyone thinking we're doing something else.  Great, so am I not supposed to be there either?

"Anywhere you like.  I know a lot of really good quiet places these days," she says.  A bunch of five star hotels along the mile... Some observation decks after hours.

"Wonderful. I... I'll gather the stuff then." he says with a smile.

Still a bit confused by her boy of never ending surprises she just smiles back. Maybe?  No... not yet.  But what if..  Oh just shut up and accept something at face value like he does.  He'd probably paint anyone with dyes.  Sylvia or... Sammy... or Laney...  hmmm.... grrr... remember..face value.

Even though her eyes cloud up for a moment she shakes her head, dashing the wayward thoughts and gives Colin a hug and kiss before rushing off to class.  "We'll set it up later?"

"Ok. Good. It'll give us a chance to talk. I've been missing that too."

(I think we're all set here.)
